Ordering smaller size Wheelie Bins and Assisted Collection

You can order smaller wheelie bins and ask for assisted collection at:https://www.ealing.gov.uk/info/201167/rubbish_and_recycling/2108/your_new_collection_service/3.If as a last resort this does not work you can email DongaB@ealing.gov.uk, Bodinga was very kind and helpful, but I fear he may reach overload very soon, remember this is not of his making. What you should not do under any circumstance is remove your garden and replace it with hard standing to take the bins, council officers have been telling householders they have to do this. Blue, recycle bins are available in the small size, but you do have to persevere to get one.

Simon - you mean the 140s? We had a small black one delivered and the medium (240) blue. We were expecting two small ones as requested but perhaps the blue ones aren't available in the smallest size. Chris

They are trundling a blue wheelie bin along the pavement in Chiswick (LBE) and tipping green boxes into it.  they were doing that on Tuesday in Ealing with a green wheelie and tipping green sacks into it.  If you only have a little waste and recycling then ask for a reassessment.  It's a fortnightly collection which it wasn't before but we can easily go six weeks when there are four us without putting out a black sack and six months when I was on a real waste reduction exercise.  I'm not sure how they are going to deal with cardboard.  Paper and thin card are listed for the wheelie but not brown cardboard.  I know of at least two streetbanks for cardboard recycling but those always seem to be full.  Cardboard in the recycling at home has increased a lot with internet shopping.

How ridiculous. We cannot fit the oversized 360s into our bin area so if the Council doesn't swap our bins over, we will have to remove (banish) two of them to the back, to be left unused-so what's the difference?

Are they worried about all the people on the Brentham Estate and on the Bedford Park Estate?  An executive decision was made to save costs by issuing something that will suit a big household, no consultation was made, and front gardens were measured using google.  It depends a lot on how much waste you made before.  The problem people will be those people who don't know! Nappies for babies and adults create a lot more waste.If you are one of the people who has wheelie bins completely filling the space between your front wall and windows then I would ask for a reassessment on safety grounds.

I think that people with allotments are very likely to be using their own and quite likely to be very happy to have some more.  I've seen plastic bottles used over the tops of canes to protect allotmenteers from accidentally poking their eyes out. I'm sure there are lots of other gadgets and solutions for problems that they have come up with for themselves too.

Come on other Schools and Scouts etc!This is a great chance.  And if you want helpers I'm sure there are people out there - it is just a matter of asking in the right places.My niece is a primary school teacher and she found it extremely hard work trying to raise funds for and accessing stuff like this for the gardening club.  She only a week ago asked me if I had any potato sacks - but black bins work well for growing potatoes.

Thank you. I hadn't quite got over the shock of the bins' arrival so I hadn't investigated further. I did look at the Council website to see when they would be collected and found that on the day after the bin was delivered the website was saying that "black bags" would be collected on 6th June in my area, however, yesterday that had changed to "recycling bin, white recycling bag,,," would be collected on 6th June and the "black bags" had been put back to June 14th which meanns that the random black bags scattering the area that I live in which were left behind after being out after the covert and unpublicised  Bank Holiday Monday collection will have to wait an extra week.I will now read the leaflets which came with the bins. Thank you for explaining that these are the instructions, I thought it was just some kind of Council propaganda.

Remember you can recycle other things - just NOT in the Kerbside recycling collection.You can for instance recycle using the street recycling banks and using the supermarket recycling banks.You should check whether the manufacturer has identified the packaging and given recycling instructions.  These still depend on what the Council's contracts are.You can take some plastic film to recycle with carrier bags at the larger supermarkets.  This tends to be stretchy plastic bags - not clingfilm.

Answering John Murias' question, the new wheelie bins are supplied with a printed 'instruction' leaflet.  As follows:--------------------------------------------------------Put the following into the blue wheelie bin: cardboard and thin card/paper, envelopes and junk mail/newspapers and magazines/plastic bottles, pots, tubs/metal tins and cans, aerosol cans, clean foil/glass bottles and jars/food and drink cartons.Textiles such as clothes, bags, belts, curtains, blankets,shoes tied in pairs, odd socks and lingerie can be recycled.  Put these items in a bag and place on top of your blue bin on your recycling collection day.Household batteries can also be recycled.  Put them in a tied bag and place on top of your blue bin on your recycling day.-------------------------------------------------------

What interests me is the scope of recycling in the new universal recycling bins. There are things that are recycled at the recycling centre in Greenford that were not handled by the old multi-bag system: for example, can we put clothes, batteries, and electrical items in the new bins as they are going to large automated recycling centres?

Oh, that's not good. I didn't realise the plan was to incinerate them! We're in Leighton Rd, W13. We have allotments nearby. Maybe they could make use of them in some capacity.At the time of writing the last message we were still awaiting our bins but then yesterday they finally turned up. We'd asked for small and they managed to deliver one small and one larger - but I imagine this is happening to a lot of people.

Still too far for many people without a car.  I don't think bus drivers are keen on people getting on buses with dirty old recycling containers.

Yes but we've been told that they are just going for incineration and it would be much better to reuse them in our cash-starved schools and communities - scouts - where are you?Let's email our Councillors and ask them to make the best of a bad deal by not just getting rid of the boxes (there are ideas given by the Council on the website I believe) but making sure that a very good use is made of them.

I'm sure I've seen a reference to collection points for the old bins, too. Elthorne Park was one of them but the facility was just going to be available for a week. Unfortunately, I can't remember where I read it.

We don't have the education system that we used to have either.  With both parents working many children don't learn to cook or have any idea as to where their food comes from.  This is practical work which can be more interesting and is therefore absorbed and enjoyed better by a lot of children.  We need them to have enthusiasms and aspirations beyond being a model or popstar!

Use them for plants.  I would wait if you can and see if anyone wants them - eg for growing potatoes or other vegetables.  There is still time to sow radishes and spinach and herbs or even flowers this year.  It would be good if some of the schools took them up for gardening.  My niece used to run the garden club at a primary school and was always looking for containers.  So many children could easily take them in - if they aren't still using them.  Those of us whose homes are not suitable for wheelies will continue to use them - an they will need replacing some time.  The Council should have organised liaison between departments on this - but they don't seem to have done that.  I'd love to hear differently.

Not recyclable or even being collected... so either to the dump as landfill or kicking about the streets and floating in the waterways of Ealing for the foreseeable future.

You have to dispose of them yourself, not good when you have a dustbin are a rather small pensioner and do not have a car.  I am still challenging this one.

You can get smaller than that.

But as I have said before, you CANNOT order the 240 litre standard size on that form.We have been given *360*s. We want 240s the only way is to ring the Council and hope you can get through to someone who is sensible.
