Still haven't received wheelie bins

Is anyone else in this position? We have had our last collection of the boxes & but haven't received the wheelie bins. I wonder if it's because we have ordered the mid size bins. If we get the huge ones I've seen everywhere else there is nowhere to put them. We are a block of 4 flats in a conversion & have ordered 2 of each, with 2 households sharing.

You should not be removing hedges, email your ward councillor and ask them where you go for help for your neighbour.  She may have a social worker if she has dementia who should also be able to help.

I have now completed the online reassessment form on her behalf (her English is not good). I have also emailed our landlords asking if they would remove a hedge to make more space.

I haven't seen the small bins, but I think she perhaps could. She has just come home & has gone nuts. She says she doesn't want them there. I told her one was for recycling, the other for rubbish. She didn't even understand what recycling is & insisted she never has any, yet she puts some out every day. Some of the buildings like ours have two for each flat. I managed to get that down to two shared by 2 flats. The fortnightly collection is the problem. The bins could have been half the size if they did it weekly. Plus, the lids don't close properly. I can just see the foxes in there now.

It needs reassessment. If she asks for assisted collection then she is more likely to be able to have the smaller bins.  Do you think that she could manage with the smaller black wheelie bin for two weeks.

Assisted collection won't help. Her problems are day to day, to do with what she puts in the bins. I can move the correct ones forward for collection day (only a couple of feet). It halves the width of her entrance/exit to/from the steps down to the basement. She's not home today but I know she'll be upset when she sees it. I had to put 2 of the bins 2 deep in order to even do this.

If it blocks her entrance to her basement flat then surely it also blocks her exit.  Sounds very dangerous to me.  Try and get her an assisted collection and you may be able to get her a smaller recycling bin.  Others have achieved this.

Yes, I was told today that they will still collect it, and you can now mix all recycling. Our bins have just arrived, but as I expected, they restrict my neighbours access to her basement flat. She also has dementia so it will be difficult to explain to her. I've ben telling her about the bins but next day she doesn't remember. She just puts her rubbish anywhere that takes her fancy. Now I need to find a small pot of paint to number them!

Still not received also, filled in their online form. If we put out our rubbish the 'old way' will they still collect it?

We are still keeping them because we are deemed unsuitable for a wheelie bin collection.  There are other small terraced houses which also should be keeping them.If you are not going to repurpose your green box then please find a school or scouts or community project for it.Allotmenteers tend to be very practical and may have a use for them too.  Cultivate London has a project they are collecting them for and Oaklands Primary School.Maybe we'll hear about some more.

Collection day is tomorrow & we still don't have the new bins.A lot of people are reporting the same thing on Twitter. I guess we just use the green boxes until they come. Luckily we haven't thrown them away yet

Looks like you will have to put in a lot of requests for assisted collections - or some other change/concession in order for it to be safe/work.

Good point Mark about the lid being hinged on the wrong side.  I was hoping to place my in an alcove and all is wrong way round

I hadn't realised that. That will be a problem for us when we get them as everyone in our building is elderly

My parents cannot manage the bins at all. Even with a small driveway they cannot get the bins past the car, which means moving the car out into the road. The bins cannot get past parked cars.But worst of all is the bins are designed back to front. To lift the lid and load the bin you stand at the front. However this means the wheels and handle are at the back.When the bin is full you cannot move it as the handle and wheels are at the back.To place the bin the other way round so it can me manoeuvred easily and safely  leaves it almost impossible for the lid to be opened and stuff thrown in.For elderly this is almost impossible and pretty dangerous.But just who is the fool who selected such a clumsy design?

If they are blocking an entrance then they are blocking a fire exit.They need to rethink and be more flexible.

I regularly use the recycling banks for old electricals, clothes, shoes etc. The problem with the bins is the space they will take up, even with 2 households sharing.

Yes, I knew there were 3 sizes, but I'd only seen one until today, & presumed it must be the largest, but today I saw a huge one, so they are much bigger than I imagined. My neighbour in the basement is not happy as they will partially block her entrance when we get them.

Somme Councils give you an idea of how big they are by the number of black sacks they expect you to be able to put in them.If you use all the recycling opportunities given by the Council just kerbside you won't have a lot of residual waste.  There are other opportunities to recycle in streetbanks, at the supermarket and at the Reuse & Recycling Centre.  Then other places to reuse.

I thought the ones I had seen around were the large ones (as they are very big), but today I saw even bigger ones, so I guess the sizes are much bigger than I imagined. 4 of the medium size is gonna be huge at our block. They look ridiculously out of place at all the properties where I've seen them

Up until this morning, I hadn't received mine either. I've requested a small rubbish bin and put a notice to that effect in my garden just in case...  what's the betting it'll be delivered?
