Secretary of State 'Calls In' Ealing Town Centre Plans

Kudos to the Secretary of State for ordering a review of the high rise development monstrosity overshadowing Haven Green, which was heavily promoted by Julian Bell and his gang.It's a shame the Secretary of State can't 'call in' the introduction of the wheelie bins in Ealing though!  I still can't believe the good people of Ealing willingly elect these scoundrels to lead the council ...

I fully agree that the current retail is poor and needs revitalising.  In fact I actually quite liked the plans the developers have proposed for the retail portions of the scheme.  What I found totally outrageous was the idea of erecting an 18-storey high rise tower of £1,000+ per sqft flats, which would have cast a permanent shadow over Haven Green and be yet again another skyscraper eyesore visible from all over the borough (such as the monster recently erected on Uxbridge Road which ruins the views when walking in Walpole Park etc.)

I only hope that if the current plan is rejected the opposition doesn't just scream "Yay we won" but rather sits down with the developers to discuss what an appropriate plan would look like. Progress *is* needed on that block. For every old building (most of which would have had their facades kept or aren't original anyway) there are two or three ugly buildings in that block, including a couple of truly hideous abominations that are embarrassing to look at.
