Smaller Wheelie bins in brown

Hey everyone, I've been getting a lot of enquiries at work from people residing in Ealing. People don't seem to be happy with the size and colour of the bins provided by the council, as they are too big, and deemed too garish/visible in blue.Subsequently, my company has been receiving a lot of orders in Ealing for our brown 120 litre bins. The problem is the people. It is always the same houses.Many people already protect their waste in bins.  Tie the bin to a wall or weigh it down with a brick and keep the lid tightly on - as has been done by many for years - and you won't have a problem. Others spray their black sacks.I don't understand what the problem is with people nowadays and why they think that someone else should sort out all their problems for them.  What happened to initiative?

The problems is bags not being collected when they should. Bank Holidays are the main peak of this. People forget and leave bags out up to 2 days early.The other oversight is that these piles of bags will continue to be accumulated in mainly locations such as shop parades with flats with no storage space and access, which is quite a few areas.  These will not be serviced by wheelie bins as they are bags left for collection from dwellings where wheelie bins cannot be accommodated at all in any way.If you take a look around areas where wheelie are already in use you will see the same old mess. But more to do with missed collections or residents who are not familiar with the collection methods and times. And whom the refuse dept ought to be focusing on.This is the key problem and yet has not been solved at all.

I witnessed the best advert for the whellie bins this weekend when a number of roads in South Ealing were covered in litter as the foxes had decimated the black plastic bags.We need to be positive and like other areas make the bins a plus not a minus.

And meanwhile in LBH the operatives are taking black sacks out of wheelie bins because it is actually easier for them to do this than take the bins to the vehicle.Whose garden and whose waste is it?Take a last look at our small gardens.  They may not all be wonderful but adding these hideous big wheelies is not going to help - and will in many cases just add to the problem.With consultation I'm sure the councils could have come to better solutions and solution 1 would be to deal with the people who are not coping with their waste and helping them to find solutions ie making sure that the planning permission which included bin space retains that bin space and manages it well and taking action against landlords and agents who are not managing their tenants.

We have seen the specifications for smaller bins set out for residents of Brentham and Bedford Park. The bins are required to conform to EN840 standards with a minimum height of 93cm. Provided that residents elsewhere meet those standards then I can see no good reason for the Council to refuse to collect from them - unless special vehicles will be used solely in Brentham and Bedford Park which seems highly improbable.

I think the reasoning behind the councils refusal, is because the refuse trucks have a mechanism which houses & lifts the bins on behalf of the operatives.Therefore unless you can get an exact match in size, they will remain in place

The council has just put up a warning not to buy these bins and expect them to be collected.

It may be that these smaller brown bins are only allowed in the Bedford Park conservation area and surrounding streets. The letter we received from the local residents' groups suggested that they were being allowed by the Council as a special deal for this area. We are also being provided with smaller black bins for general waste if we want them.

That's correct. The latest was that the Council won't pick up non-standard smaller wheelie bins particularly as these are not the right colour. This is just adding to the local wheelie bin mountain.
