As Executive director of regeneration and housing Pat Hayes has overall responsibility for the planning department in Ealing, as well as responsibility for "regeneration" which is taking the form of allowing developers to build many flats that are too expensive for local residents to buy. The dual responsibilities are a conflict of interest - which is exacerbated by the constitutional change (for which residents were not properly consulted) to increase the threshold for schemes being considered by our elected representatives on the planning committee from 15 to 50 residential units. Save Ealing's Centre (www.saveealingscentre.com) which I represent oppose such schemes when, as many are, they are damaging to the character of the local area. Local councils now have greatly increased powers due to changes in legislation, but in my opinion this is not reflected in the ability, knowledge and experience of many councillors who represent us. As an example the controlling Labour group voted through the changes to the constitution above without a single Labour councillor opposing them - notwithstanding opposition from both the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats. You may think that this just reflects party political disagreement, but think again: they are voting away the very powers which we have elected them to exercise on our behalf to a council executive who appear to view proper consultation as an inconvenience to be discharged as simply as possible - rather than our constitutional right. I urge everyone to put pressure on their ward councillors to think carefully about what they are voting for and not just toe the party line. And if they don't listen then to make it very clear to them that they will no longer be representing us after the next local council elections in 2018...
