Excellent to see the new wheelie bins are finally coming

Now we should see a drastic reduction in rubbish that's currently strewn across the streets.  With far more space in them, fitted lids, and of course taking up a lots less floor space than the ridiculous little boxes it's well done Ealing Council.

For years my unrecyclable waste has been in an ordinary sized dustbin with a lid which is shorter and wider than the new wheelie bins.  I lie it with a black sack and then when that is full tie the black sack up and leave the lid off. The bin of probably heavier than the rubbish which is made up mostly plastic film and polystyrene packaging. The bin is visible and yet still sits behind an ordinary short front wall.In Chiswick and Brentford because of the difficulties of moving these wheelie bins around and hitching them up to the lorries the operatives have been lifting out the black sacks.  What is the difference?I had problems once with the food waste bin when I put it near the edge of the steps.  Not since I changed its position. The bins although different widths are all basically the same height - too high to be in front of windows.

The Council's website states that there are three sizes of black bin, small, medium and large as per extract:'Most households will receive standard sized 240 litre wheelie bins. These are 110cm high, 58cm wide and 74cm deep and hold approximately five full bin bags.If you have a larger or smaller than average household you can apply for a different sized bin.Smaller 140 litre bins are 110cm high, 50cm wide and 55cm deep and hold approximately three full bin bags.Larger 360 litre bins are 111cm high, 66cm wide and 88cm deep and hold approximately seven full bin bags.You can also request to share a bin with a neighbour.'Apparently all households will receive a letter from the councile sometime this month detailing the arrangements.

Peter Yale pointed outThey can also only be one size as they are wheeled, set in a mechanical lifting device & tipped into the back of the refuse truck...This should be interesting.The point has already been made about accessing these bins in roads with cars parked nose to tail.Basically there's going to be a lot of going backand forth along the pavements with the bins.Every one of which requires a return journeydon't forget.Then there's now going to be the wait while each bin is dealt with individually. With no difference in the time taken whether the bin is full or three quarters empty.Near where I live are maisonettes which presumablywill have four of these bins for each entry.Plus the fact that unlike now with sacks, if theresbeen any problem with the schedule it will be impossible to send out just any old lorry out and sling the sacks in the back. If there's no lifter lorry available for whatever reason - as if therecould possibly be ever any delays - then that will be it.As I said it should all prove very interesting. michael adams...

There was a lot of opinion on here regarding wheely bins. I am sitting on the fence, although I do think they are cumbersome & unsightly,pavement blocking prone to blowing over in high windsHowever looking at the streets on collection day, because residents put plastic sacks out, the foxes have a field day.Maybe thats why the council are introducing them?They can also only be one size as they are wheeled, set in a mechanical lifting device & tipped into the back of the refuse truck

Tom,I am sorry. In many roads in Walpole ward west of Northfield Ave they will spoil the look of these roads 24/7.They are taller than the walls, windowsills and hedges...they stick up! Many will give up and not wheel them through their terraced properties. So the street scene changes to Plastic wheelie bin alley. I've seen it in Reading. They are probably too big for the small households they weren't designed to supply. At our ward forum the small alternatives were not on display. And no one at the council wants to know that the food bins that are to be collected weekly can be opened by Walpole ward foxes. These are good at spreading the contents all over the place. So I am sorry but the wheelie bins are litter in themselves.
