Xmas Trick or treating

So I had a young lad knocking on the front door last night at 18:30ish attempting to sing jingle bells and then asking for money / sweets. I politely said I had nothing for him and to try another house. His mother just stood there and said nothing. There were 2 other woman with their girls doing the same all along the street.  Now I don't mind Halloween trick or treating but this just didn't seem quite right. Am I just a miserable old man or is this just a sign of the times ?

I dont want people knocking at my door & requesting money.If I have any desire to give to a charity I do so off my own back without being approached & made to feel obligated.Its becoming the norm again, as I think it was stopped for a while, for collectors to shake a tin directly at you & ask for a donation.Even getting a tyre changed the other week I was pushed into a corner about donating so I felt compelled, I had no time to make an excuse as to reasons I didnt want to

In rural Yorkshire we chapel folk sang round the villages collecting for the Methodist Church.

My experience of the last few years tells me that the carol 'singers' don't even know the full words to the carols and only make a half hearted and gratutious stab at singing anyway. If they were doing it for charity I might have more time for them but do they need the money themselves?

I used to make a fortune each Christmas carol singing in my Chilterns village in the 60s. Often five bob a night.

Had this the other day on the trainI couldn't make out the actual carol they were singing due to the East European lilt on the accent.

Neighbourhood carol singing has always gone on.  Nothing new here.
