Ealing Honey

A very elderly and beautiful lady swears that the best honey you can have is the honey produced by local bees. Does anyone know of someone who keeps bees in this area, and sells their honey. I mentioned Manuka Honey - the lady obviously thought I was totally insane!

Friends of Walpole Park harvest the honey in the hives in the park and sell it for £6 a jar. Hives right next to each other can produce very different flavoured and coloured honey. A beekeeper in Hackney who had her honey analysed was told it contained 44% Tree of Heaven, Bramble, 20%, Lime 10%, Buddleia, 9%, Privet, 6%, Pyrus/Sorbus, 3%, Nettle, 2%, Poaceae (grasses?) 2%, Amelanchier, 2%, Meadowsweet, 1% and then pollen in proportions less than 1%: Aesculus hippocastanum, Papaver, Plantago and Prunus, Eucalyptus.Everyone's bees will find different flowers but this gives you an idea of the variety of flowers London bees can find.

l totally agree - manuka is overrated and very expensive. l keep bees in my garden and would be happy to sell some honey. l am near Pitzhanger Lane but could deliver locally if  collection is a problem. l have spring ( light and floral) , summer (darker and more chestnutty) and set honey. l sell 8oz, 12oz and 16oz jars - prices on request. l can be contacted on 0208 9971786 or 07841396946.regards Clare

I'm not sure there is an Ealing specific flavour to honey. My next door neighbour says his honey contains more lime than usual due to the trees in our street. And the planting along the Central line embankment at the bottom of the garden will bring in different sources of nectar. But a mile away, bees may be finding very different food sources.

I bought some local honey once - I must confess it didn't taste unique. Perhaps my tastbuds have lost their usefulness!  That happens with age!

Hi Perrin, yes as Terry says there are hives at Northfields (that's my blog he's linked to, thanks Terry!)I'm not selling honey this year but can put you in touch with the beekeeper I share the site at Northfields with if you like. The apiary at Perivale belongs to the Ealing Beekeepers Association and west London honey is sold there on the 1st, 3rd and 4th Saturday of the month between 2-3pm.
