How does one define Britishness? What are the best qualities of Britishness? Is it sangfroid, tolerance, a sense of humour in adversity, self assuredness, honesty in business?

I agree with the points you two make.On thinking about it more, the two outstanding points about Britishness are the ones of fair play and general decency to others. Just my opinion.

I think you're right about sense of humour in general, Thelma, although a holiday to Croatia last year convinced me that the Croats have a very similar sense of humour: quite dark and sarcastic and very willing to laugh at themselves. So we are not alone!

I've always thought the three qualities that define the British are a healthy disregard for authority in its more pompous forms, a completely surreal sense of humour and a willingness to root for the underdog. The British sense of humour is unlike any other nation's IMO - very few citizens of other countries are as willing to laugh at themselves as we are.
