Cyclists, close encounters on pavements.

Many near misses for pedestrians around Haven Green roads and on the green, probably due to cyclist riding on pavements to avoid a longer route on the one-way system. Is cycle riding on these pavements legal? Tony Millier

In general cyclists are not allowed to ride on pavements along the side of the road.If it's not alongside the road cyclists are allowed to ride there.If the council want to prohibit cyclists riding on paths that are no alongside the road they have to stick up no cycling signs.It's more complicated than that but that's the gist of it.

There is also a difference between children riding on the pavement slowly and ringing a bell to ask to please pass you and youths riding fast along the pavement with no warning when passing you.

To avoid confusion with Gerry's response please note the distinction between paths across Haven Green and the pavements bordering the roads around the Green.

As with the majority of paths through parks in the Borough cyclists are permitted to use the paths through Haven Green.  Given that it is quite busy pedestrian wise I think it would be prudent to have signs pointing this out and pedestrian priority - and I say this as one of those demon cyclists.

Hello Tony, no its not legal to ride a bicycle when on a pavement.  We have this problem occasionally in our road. Good luck.
