Our new trees need water!

With the help of the Mayor we have lots of new trees to brighten up the landscape.  Keen gardeners will have noticed it hasn't rained of late.  New trees needs lots of water becuase the root ball will have been disturbed.  Am I right in thinking that the Council will not be doing this , instead relying on local residents?

How correct you are Tony - I've just checked our three olive trees and they seem to love this weather.  I'm hopeful of a good harvest of olives in the late autumn!

Life's too tick box orientated nowadays.  They were probably donated/won/bought trees but not waterbags. Whose budget would waterbags come out of?

Sounds like a good idea, never seen or heard of waterbags before outside of a western.So why don't the council do the water bag thing? That could solve the issue in one swoop.Or is it more likely that the water bags will get used for water fights by kids?

Just put water bags around the two saplings outside our house - they will drip water into the soil for the next 5-8 hours. And then we repeat next week.  Water bags were a gift from TFL.

Only some people think you are loopy or stupid!  Some of us applaud your efforts.  I certainly do and I think we should try and make that more of a majority.

Quite right Philip. Sadly nowadays people are not much interested in the environment. Look at the mess they leave in the parks and pretty gardens as well as the streets. Octogenarians like myself do the best we can picking up litter but people seeing us think we are plain stupid or loopy.

I had a tree planated for my mother in Lammas PArk last year instead of a gravestone but the young man who planted it said although it would get watered 'occasionally', we should try to maintin it ourselves.  Not easy to carry gallons of water too often. Having said that, it had flowered beautifully this spring.

During drought periods like at present, I water the young'ish trees and flowerbeds in our road - the ones near our front garden. I feel virtuous!BTW, I'm nursing and watching our three olive trees in the gardens.

A group of people could form a chain ferrying buckets of water to the thirsty trees...  A task force of teenagers?It would be worth a photo...

A bucket of about 2 gallons will suffice a sapling for a few days.It's not a tall order, but if we want trees, then it does not hurt us as residents to do a bit.I see some ( not many) who regularly weed the footpaths and sweep the pavements outside their homes. Others who trim elderly neighbours hedges. But a real rarity nowadays.I find it funny that those who spend a fortune lavishing luxuries on their homes, never lift a finger past their garden gate, always expecting someone else to do it.  Some even look at you with derision if they see you sweeping up.  Such a shame we have propagated such self centred people and undermined civic pride.

I have seen the Council out watering newly planted trees.  That said, no doubt the operatives are under-resourced, and there is no harm in adding a few watering cans full to any that are outside of your house.

You are so right. Trees on Ealing Common have died as have trees along the pavement on Acton Hill,  in Twyford Crescent Gardens. purely  from lack of water. Also the little fruit trees in the gardens near Acton High  School opposite Millhill Pub ( now new flats to be  ) have shrivelled up and the fruit now lost. Such a shame. If I was younger I would trudge round with a watering can or two.
