National Service and Prince Harry?

Prince Harry has suggested that we should bring back National Service in the UK. An interesting question - what do others about this suggestion? - other opinions please.

Agree with Nigel - in favour of non-military National Service, compulsory at 18 for both sexes. When I did NS, I resented being conscripted, but I learnt a great deal at that sensitive age which taught me a lot. I saw service in various parts including, Padgate , Wiltshire, Pembrokeshire, Kinloss Scotland and other places of interest. Also met a varied number of people - had a great deal of valuable experience which was priceless and unique.

I am in favour of a non-military form of National Service. There's plenty to be done and it would give many young people a sense of purpose and some essential skills.

Do we want a professional military lumbered with a bunch of amateurs?  Where would the funding come from when there have been massive defence spending cuts?

Lousy idea. Harry was going a bit off the rails and is, let's face it, not very bright. I'm sure the army did him the world of good, but that doesn't mean we have to force all teenagers to do it.
