Recycling!

Yet again having sorted my recycling it was unceremoniously dumped all together into the back of a refuse truck.Sod it, I am not going to bother they can just pick up more black bags in future!

See Phil Kay's post above.You are unlucky is having your collection missed.  If you manage to reduce the amount that you have then you should have no problem going another week.  Have you squashed all the soft and easily squashable plastic milk cartons?  Cola bottles?  Stacked those plastic brown mushrooms boxes?  If you don't/can't avoid buying them (mushrooms keep better in a brown paper bag in the fridge) and don't reuse the boxes then stacking something that you regularly buy can save space.http://www.therubbishdiet.org.uk/top-tips-for-a-plastic-less-lifestyle/http://www.lovefoodhatewaste.com/    has some good info and interesting recipes - rhubarb curry anyone?  You don't have to choose the England site (what a strange idea that you should have to).  Personally I reckon the Scots are more prudent.

MartinIf you want them to collect your missed / ignored recycling, I've had considerable success by contacting the Council as follows:http://www.ealing.gov.uk/faqs/200619/plastic_recycling/answer/853/what_happens_if_my_plastics_sack_is_not_emptiedThere's a simple form to complete or just call them.  In my experience they generally collect on the same day if you call before noon.

Today instead of spilling and leaving debris along the pavement they did not bother to empty the white sack of plastics! It will be full to overflowing by next Friday - 8 days due to the Bank holiday.

So did you watch the BBC2 programme on waste?  All those enormous empty wheelie bins and waste and recycling still all over the place. The collection methods vary from area to area ie you can't expect our system to be the same as Newcastle.  I wish they would show more film of the way that other areas work (or don't) and the new technologies.

How True it is about recycling problems. The number of times i have had to ask for help is frustrating. The Council has lost Control over the regular collecting of garbage program.I have no respect for the administrators of the Collection arrangements.Living at the end of a Cul de Sac is a nightmare when a strong wind blows all the loose debris from the Broadway, and the problem is compounded by the way the collections are operated and missed out for no apparent reason, but for the Whim of the garbage collecting team. I try to report the problem each time but today i just could not get an answer either on line nor by phone.My Councillor admits brazenly that he cannot get anyone to listen to him and grumbles that people should not expect him to be their Secretary.There is no sensible answer to that ,is there.

Marginally better yesterday.A two hopper truck arrived. Food waste into one side and all of my sorted recycling unceremoniously mixed and dumped into the other hopper.Now, if I were 'generous of spirit' I would belive that someone is being paid minimum wage to sort this at Greenford (something that could be done far easier at kerbside).The council claim that wheelie bins will save £2million. How much of this is the waste from 'double handling' under the existing, poorly managed, contract?

Just to add,  maybe putting everything into  black bin bags and doing away with recycling would result in cleaner roads and pavements.Since the introduction of the up and over loading trucks,so much stuff falls out of the small loading pockets on the side of the truck and is left on the road to blow around in the wind.The loading operatives do their best with the equipment they are supplied with.PS. I do not work in the black bag industry.

Yes I have and although I have an acknowledgement the proof will be when they collect my correctly sorted recycling tomorrow. If it all goes into a refuse truck then I shall simply no longer make the effort.

I hope that you have complained to the Council about this.  Unfortunately it does look as though there is a problem with the contract.  Although I remember reading that it had already been re-negotiated behind closed doors - why?  Surely the contract can be terminated if the Contractors can't fulfil it?  You do wonder what they were actually asked to do.  Who from the Council is supposed to monitor it - anybody??  Surely it wasn't solely self-monitoring?  Everybody knows that that doesn't work.

Last week the refuse collector just threw the green box back into our garden spilling about a dozen items onto the road and left them there, not bothering to pick them up. I had to go out later and gather them up, just dumped them into the black sack, if they who are paid to do this from our Council tax, why should I bother.

I shall soon be joining their ranks I'm afraid.I 'religiously' sort my recycling. Wash out tins and bottles, fold the cardboard 'bale' the paper only for it all to be, twice now, unceremoniously, dumped all together into the back of a regular refuse truck.Why bother?

Unfortunately too many people can't be bothered and the state of some of the recycling bins leaves a lot to be desired.  I don't know how people have the nerve to leave such a mess for the collectors to sort out.  The little that we are asked to do is already easy.  The call for it to be easier is just a poor excuse.  Using waste as a resource is taught at least twice in the national curriculum.Unfortunately nobody seems to follow up and contact the problem makers with information.

Don't think it was the usual team as they are normally here early-mid morning whereas this lot didn't arrive until 15:00.No excuse though to simply dump sorted recycling.

It's very strange, isn't it?  I've found them pretty diligent over the last year or two.Was it your usual team or a different one?  The contractor has pared down the budget to such an extent that if they are a few people short, the whole collection is b*ggered.
