White Hart Hanwell - closed

Another long standing Ealing pub has rung last orders for the final time. The White Hart On Greenford Avenue, Hanwell, is boarded up and if rumours are true, will become a Tesco.I grew up in Hanwell and have lived here all my life, but this was never a pub for me because of the shady reputation it carried. Whilst I hate to see a long standing public house disappear, I do think that this is one we can do without in the borough, but I know it will be missed by many and was a shame that a minority managed to give it a sinister reputation.

Thanks for that Paul.I think that I only ever had one drink in the place (must be forty years ago) after a five-a-side tournament at Hanwell Community Centre.I recall feeling like a 'stranger in my own town' and drank swiftly and left. A strange place.

Does anyone have any more news about this building and what might happen to it?I've heard nothing at all locally and the planning portal shows nothing new for the site since a refused application in July 2013.

I thought it might end up as flats too - but I haven't been able to find any planning permission details yet, on the Ealing planning portal.Also, it's described as a "Pub for sale" on the website Simon identified.The whole place has been comprehensively sealed for the time being.

Hi Phil,No grapevine from a non-official source so could be garbage. I would be surprised if the area had both a Co-op and Tesco tbh...

Good spot Simon - I also note that it's (nearly) been sold freehold, so no Fuller's tie in at all.Bud - is that an official rumour re Tesco?  Do you know whether that's likely to be true?

I think the only pub remaining north of the Uxbridge Road is the Roundhouse, but I think it's only open when the golf course is being used. I think a smallish bar would do quite well down the Poets Corner end of the Greenford Avenue.I can't say I'll miss the White Hart. I've been in there about a dozen times and never much enjoyed the experience, though I've never had any bother.I bet the Co-Op is peed off if the site does become a Tesco Metro.

What with the pub in Copley Close shutting several years ago seems to be a barren area for any pubs let alone a decent one. Or is there a hidden gem lurking off the main thoroughfares?Talking of unusual pubs in the Borough I had half an hour to spare in Southall a few weeks ago and went in to Three Horseshoes at the main crossroads on Uxbridge Road and ordered a glass a red wine.  They had none - nor white.  No food either.  Ah those were the days, pre-gastro, when a pint and bag of peanuts were the main and only fare on the menu.

Probably around £6 IIRC.The atmosphere was so intimidating it was easy to find a 'better boozer'.

I think that I had a drink there once and it was bit like walking into a wild west saloon.Three of us after a game of 5-a-side at HCC walked in and you could have heard a pin drop.We 'braved' it for a pint each before walking out never to return.
