When I returned a book a few days ago, I noticed signs advising that from April, the loan period is being reduced to 3 weeks. Is this supposed to be something that saves money?

Ealing's libraries are now run by Carillion:http://www.ccslibraries.com/libraries/ealing-libraries/aboutI was told about the change to 3 week renewals yesterday with the explanation that it would bring Ealing into line with all the other Authorities' libraries in the "group".When this was last done - 15 years ago? - it seemed to be all about increasing the usage figures, as per Laura's comments. I never saw an assessment of whether this worked or not but I was very pleased when it went back to monthly.

It's likely to be related to advocacy. Reduced loan times should in theory equal a greater number of issues. The higher the issues, the more value a library is seen to have. Sadly in these current times libraries have to prove and justify their existence constantly. Without adequate funding this is difficult.I may of course be wrong: see what the library says. They are unlikely to give you the above answer, however it doubtless plays a significant part.p.s I am a librarian, but not with Ealing libaries.
