Fish and chips in Ealing?

Which is the best fish'n chip outlet in Ealing now?  Over time they change ownership and the cooking is altered. Long ago, we used to like Maxwell's fish and chip restaurant in Ealing(High Street?) - their fish was really fresh and reasonably priced and their chips were crunchy outside and perfect inside.

I'm sensing some hostility there.Greenford Fish & Chips is excellent, by the way. Everything done really nicely, you can sit in and eat, and - rare for an Ealing food provider - it has a a full 5 star hygeine rating!

I'm sure that the moderators could remove Gerry's posts if they were asked to, but there must be very many of them on many threads going back many years. The trouble is that if you take one person's posts out of a thread it can make the whole thread conversation into meaningless gibberish.Personally I think that as long as his family are happy, and surely they would have said something to the moderators if they weren't, Gerry's posts should stay as a sort of memorial to him.

If you don't mind making a bit of a journey, the best fish and chips I've had since moving to Ealing 33 years ago is Greenford Fish & Chips 63 the broadway Greenford nearly opposite Oldfield Lane, they take telephone orders too, as they cook to order ideal. We had the freshest piece of fish in years from there

Also heard good things about the Codfather. We are fans of the Golden Chip in Hanwell. Unfortunately our locals in Northfields (Andy's and Kings) have poor FSA hygene ratings (1 star).

I too rate Stones top of Horn Lane. Enormous portions of chips...too many for my appetite even  when I ask for a small portion. Lots of other nice dishes and ,pies too.

We noticed a couple of weeks ago that the chippy on popes Ln had been taken over, and gave it a go, best fish and chips I've had in a long long time, cod and chips £6 and we both left some as there was too much

My mistake, the closed chip shop on the Broadway is actually called "Chris's", not "Sid's"!I must have been thinking of somewhere else!

Does anyone know what's happened to the fish and chip shop on Ealing Broadway, just down from the station?"Sid's" I think it's called.It has been closed for months for no apparent reason. It looks as if some sort of work has been going on in there, but nothing recent. A bit of a mystery, as I thought it did OK. Health and Safety problems perhaps? If so it's taking a very long time to sort out!I'll be sorry if it doesn't re-open as it was the only place left near to me where I could buy cold saveloys, which I love!

Wow! Good tip. The getwest article review really sells Stones on Horn Lane. Did this used to be Toni's? What happened to him?It's a good idea to have more than one provider handy to get fish and chips where ever you find yourself.If you're in Hanwell then go to the Golden Chip on Boston Road, or Blue Ocean on Pitshanger Lane.

I've just tried Stone's Fish 'n Chips, 331 Horn Lane ( E Ealing)Excellent fish ( all freshly fried for each order) and chips. Also home made crisps and 3 flavours of salt & vinegar for the chips! My wife got us a fish supper from Golden Chip on the way back from work last night and it was excellent, really lovely big piece of fish, tasty chips and a great saveloy. Will be going again!

A film at the Northfields Odeon later the Coronet, a terrific cinema aside form it's archaic sound system followed by pasty and chips from' Les and Thelma's' 'Golden Fry Bake' next door!But we actually preferred Charlie Chans Fish bar just down the Avenue near Belsize Road. He did great chips with a vegatable spring roll all for 22p in 1977!!

Maxwell's fish&chips restaurant(with a retail counter) was a very good establishment in Ealing Green - we miss it - it would be more superior to most f&c outlets in Ealing imo.

Agreed, West Kebab near the Christian Centre in Northfield Ave and Kerbisher and Thingy have lovely chips - crispy outside and floury inside. The Kerbisher fish is always fresh. Btw, I used to love the F&Cs on The Fylde coast towns near Blackpool - especially Senior's Fish and Chip shops!

Another vote from here for West5 Kebab next to what was the Northfields Odeon cinema in my youth (opposite the tube). Really superlative and huge portions. There is even a bargainous item called "baby fish and chips" which I find very filling as adult fish and chips can be on big side for me. Been to Kerbisher which I also rate. There is a quite good lunch deal and I think it costs less on Mondays.

The West Kebab on Northfield Avenue however does 'proper' double fried chips, really crispy on the outside and fluffy inside.

Yes West Kebab do Fish and Chips, but I've only had the shish Kebabs when I have been in there.Those are recommended!The chips they do are the thinner ones - not the same as you'd get in a proper chip shop.

Our local chippy, Costas on Bilton Road, Perivale is fine. My son in law swears by the chippy at Oldfield Circus, North Greenford.

The one near the Foresters used to be good years ago but now it hardly ever seems to be open at peak F&C times.My vote still goes to the Golden Chip in Hanwell.  I rarely go anywhere else these days as the disappointment is too great to bare.

I'll put in a mention for my local fish and chip shop.Blue Ocean on Pitshanger Lane does large portions, great fish (often freshly cooked for your order, which takes a while but is worth the wait) and the chips are fine.They've also bought the fishmongers a few doors down, which was TH Carr.

The One on the corner of Leighton Road and Northfield Ave just by the Foresters Pub has been great for decades, but the best kept secret is the Albany Fish bar in Albany Road Brentford, Just off Ealing Road.Excellent in all respects, beautiful light batter and excellent fish and proper old fashioned British chips and best of all reasonably priced.

Kerbisher and Malt take Tastecard which gives 50% off the price of food for two people if you eat in on any day except Friday. My Tastecard cost £30.00 for 12 months

Not having tried Kings in Northfields recently, we had a take-away haddock 'n chips and their fish was superb, but the chips were ordinary(we like 'em crispy and fluffy white inside).  Kerbisher and Malt are a credit to Ealing - always fresh and they serve a very dry sherry called Gitano(or similar). K&M are a touch pricey, but worth the effort of going there imo.

Best I've had is Kerbisher and Malt but it's pricey and not close to our house so we usually use Kings and I have to say they are decent.

When I'm three sheets to the wind and tacking along the pavement outside Ealing Broadway station to try and get on a bus, the bright lights of Chris' chip shop are like a beacon drawing me in. The chips taste great and hygiene isn't a top priority at that moment

Gerry I can recommend King's in Northfields Ave, I use it at least once a week, batter on fish is nice and chrispy  and chips are the best I have tasted

I see that King's Fish and Chip shop in Northfield Ave(near Tescos) is always busy especially in the evenings. King's always had excellent fish but lacked the best chips imo - maybe its improved 'cos being busy is usually a good sign.  Anyone agree?

I have switched allegiance to the West Kebab in Northfields.Lovely batter, chunky fish and well cooked crispy/fluffy chips.Just don't ask for a large portion of chips unless there are two of you! The portions are massive.
