I was generalising slightly Nigel.  Of course there are worthy nominations, but there's an awful lot in the Honours Awards that's questionable and rather dubious imo.

Gerry, I have two friends who have MBEs.Both are 'ordinary' people who were, in turn, nominated by 'ordinary' people for, respectively years of community and charitable works. Neither of them sought such recognition but, in the case of the charity worker, the 'gong' does open doors and enables her to raise even more funds and raise the charity's profile.

Ben and Keith, if this is addressed to me, these are my worries about the Honours List. I get the feeling its an system lead by "establishment" people and not folk like ourselves.  It full of "classes" and divisions and government led. It should be truly independant therefore unbiased and representative of "ordinary" people.

I found it rather amusing that the BBC descrived her as an "Actress and Philantorpist". I take it that the philantropist bit refers to the fact that she gave it away without charging?

Trevor Baylis inventor of the clockwork radio grew up in Southall. His father was an engineer who taught him how to use hand tools and he completed an HNC in Mechanical and Structural Engineering at Southall Technical College.

Is that addressed at me or Gerry,Ben? Both of us don't seem to enamoured of the system. I have a better idea, if it is me you refer to you have and you seem to be able to read my mind,you tell 'all of us' why you think I disapprove and then then I will tell you the real reason. That would seem fair as seem to think you know.

I have a good idea why you disapprove of the honours system,  but before I give a counter argument of it's merit can you tell all of us what it is exactly that you don't like about people being awarded a gong?

Not in the same league as other Dames,acting wise as the others who have had that accolade surely Gerry. It's all a load of old nonsense anyway but I can't see how Joan Collins has any resonance as an actress or what is so special about her.Being a 'lovely lady' surely isn't the criteria for becoming a Dame? She was probably in Ealing at some point when making some of her memorable (!) movies at Ealing Studios and might have been a temporary resident.I wonder if Jordan is next in lie?

I see Joan Collins, star of The Stud and The Bitch is to be made a Dame...Dames obviously ain't what they used to be.
