Recommendation for curry?

It's nearly the weekend, the weather's fairly grim, and I have a hankering to take the other half out for a storming good curry to blow away our winter cobwebs, any thoughts or recommendations?

We had some unexpected visitors, so we gave them take-away curries which we fetched from the excellent Papaya restaurant in Northfields Ave. We had okra and aubergine curries, beef Colombo, chicken Jaffna, steamed rice and coconut parathas.  Papaya don't deliver so a quick trip by car to collect our order. Highly recommend Papaya's curries - Sri Lankan is quite different from Indian curries imo.

Thanks Rosa for this really useful info re. Desi Tadka. We love good curries and that type of cuisine(the real McCoy) and will try Desi's for sure.Still haven't heard how Cas enjoyed his 'Ruby' last weekend.  Are you around Cas?

I have forgotten to mention that they do have a a web site and they now have an English translation of their menu. You can order your food as mild or hot as you like it.

Desi Tadka is a family run Panjabi restaurant on the Uxbridge Road on Southall/Hayes border opposite Wickes.  Desi which means traditional really lives up to its name. It is frequented mainly by Indian families, usually we are the only non-Indian there. Don't serve alcohol, so bring your own. Wonderful food cooked to order - you can actually see them cooking it; great atmosphere; and fantastic prices: starter and main course for five adults around 38 pounds, dance included. they do take away but you must collect it on the premises. Highly recommended!

The Urban Karahi is our new favourite Indian for taste.The service can be a bit patchy though and the last takeaway we had the lamb chops were burnt.  :-(

I normally do Colin but I figure that is the restaurant cannot be bothered to keep it clean and up to 'spec' then I can vote with my feet and patronise an equally good place that makes the effort.

Simple.... I had the ruby yet was still sufficiently alive to watch X Factor (though that may drain the life out of you quicker than food poisoning)These ratings are all well and good but I don't think you can always rely on them. I've been back of house in many places and you'd cringe at the state of kitchens in some very swanky places. Cuts both ways.Trust your gut instinct!!!!

For a decent ruby on a budget the Urban Karahi in Hanwell isn't bad. Their menu features a few other noodle based Asian dishes as well. On a Sunday many of the dishes are 50% off, though I think seafood and mixed grill are excluded.

We live very near the Haweli Indian restaurant and used to use it quite often - its rated only 2 for food hygiene now, so we don'y frequent it anymore.Curries feature all over Asia, not only in/rear the Sub-Continent and they are very varied. One of our favourites is called Nonya and Baba curry(aPeranakan recipe - the Peranakans are a sub-culture around those parts of Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia) and is very popular in Singapore. Incidentally, Lee Kwan Yew is from a Peranakan heritage. For what it's worth, so am I - but that's a subject for another topic thread - sorry to divert. Back to curries.

I used to use the now long gone Bilash in West Ealing and the Haweli which I believe is still there. Both were consistently good. I lived on Southall Broadway in the early 80's and always found the smaller unfussy concerns were better value and often used fresher ingredients.

I prefer a Lassi with my Indian but Gurkha if I am having a beer as Kingfisher is just a gassy Shephered Neame brew from Faversham.

We  go to Ealing for Japanese food Gerry, Atari-Ya at Ealing Common or now and again( although nowhere near as good as Atari) the Hare and Tortoise. Sami's Spice in Brentford is a fine ruby house so we go there for a curry, walking distance from home.

Interesting Keith.  We like Tiger beer which is Singaporean, but not usually availble in most Indian eateries. Cobra beer is always available and we find that a touch too sweet.  Which is your favourite Indian restaurant in Ealing Keith?

I usually have water with my curry Gerry, and only a little. I find that most lagers don't really suit a curry but a hoppy beer like a pale ale or an India Pale Ale are best but they are never on sale in a ruby house.

Jump on the 207 and head for Madhu's. Driving round Southall is hard work and you have seriously limit your beer intake!If you want to stick in Ealing, I do like Mama's.

Since the sad demise of The Sitar on South Ealing Road the king of Ealing currys has to go to Kushi's on Boston Manor Road (formerly Paras or Royal Tandoori)A recent new kid on the block that's been spot on for my 4 visits so far is Mustangs on Northfields Avenue next to the old cinemaDo love a good old ruby!!!

Cas, one gets a 'storming good curry' in sunny Southall. But I wonder which of the plentiful cuury restaurants in Southall is the best for its food and also has a customer car park available for its diners? Any opinions please?

this is exactly what I was going to say: Laguna and PapayaI went to Laguna this week for lunch under a Groupon deal and the food was wonderful: spicy, fresh, tasty and well presented.Papaya also does a great lunch deal

On the E2 and E8 bus routes is Sami's Spice on Brentford High St. Superb, unfussy ,reasonablly priced, byo without a corkage charge and great service. Also voted 117th out of London restaurants. Wherever you try, I hope you enjoy.

Cas, the recemmendations of Neil, Nigel and Phil are generally good. If that area of Ealing is what you're after, I'd still recommend The Laguna at the top of Culmington Rd and Papaya the Sri Lankan restaurant at the corner of Northfield Ave/Elers Rd.  Sri Lankan curries are quite unique and tasty which would be a great and different treat for your 'other half' and your good self. Happy eating! I fancy a treat myself this weekend too.

Been going there for over twenty years.Superb.If he likes a 'warm one' try the mixed vegetable madras as a side or main.The tandoori mixed grill wonderful.

Reasonably priced, unlicensed (bring your own alcohol) at the St Mary's Road end of Ranelagh Road in South Ealing next to St Mary's Road. As it is not actually on "South Ealing Road/St Mary's Road" it escapes the curse of that road.
