Why Ealing and Southall?

I'd be interested to know why certain ethnic communities chose a particular district of London in which to settle or a particular county in England. I'm thinking of the Polish and Indian communities - there are others eg: Caribbeans in Nottinghill, Turkish in Hackney and Dalston, Chinese and Jewish folk inthe East End, Japanese in West Acton or Irish in Kilburn?  Any ideas or opinions please?

But this is not the case for many.Quite a lot of people have upped sticks and moved lock stock and barrel in a one-way end-of-days can't-afford-to-ever-move-back sold-the-house-in-jolly-old-england kind of way.I'm quite sure that those with second homes don't care whether they receive £150 or not but then my point about jealousy stands.  After all, criminals aside, these people will most certainly have paid in enough to the system over many decades to deserve the payment whether they need it or not.  (But then, axiomatically, they probably receive the payment anyway in respect of their "first" home still firmly anchored somewhere to terra firma in the old country.)

If you have the cash to run a house abroad or to take a 'seasonal' room in an hotel you certainly don't need the £150 from the government.

Seems unusually harsh.Why pick on those who have chosen to exercise their Europe-sanctioned right to roam?They've paid their dues the same as anybody else after all.Whenever I read such protestations it always makes me wonder whether jealousy is the motivation behind them...

Actually, the Costas can still be pretty chilly in winter - especially given the standards of insulation and the complete absence of central heating in most of the housing stock.

You would love the South Koreans Bob.Fat is fat not circumferentially challenged, and there are no 'persons of colour'.The only 'taboo' matter is that of mental illness where there is a deference and the matter is always with with sensitivity.

I still find it fascinating why and how certain ethnic communities thrive in specific areas. Apart from Haringey, there are many Turkish and Kurdish pockets in Dalston and Hackney - there are quite a few in our sunny Ealing too - I'm intrigued. Any more?

Should have added Ben that there is a large Kurdish community around Green lanes in Haringey where there are still sadly street fights between them and the Turkish community who they originally settled alongside having much in common.

Erm the 'we all know that' was Ben's.Actually Ben, I did know that as my friend Dan Suh is Managing Director of Korea Foods Limited who run, unsurprisingly, a Korean Food Company with their own wholesale business, chain of Korean supermarkets and stores in New Malden and across the south along with a couple of West End Korean restaurants. They have opened an outlet to serve the Korean community in Bratislava where there are a number of Korean manufacturing companies. Couple this with Chris, an old work colleague being warden of an Anglo-Korean church just outside Kingston and my 'exposure' to Korean humour is pretty good. They don't do political correctness that's for sure :-)

Yes,  Nigel.  We all know that. But did you know that South Koreans are renowned for their sense of humour? Bet you didn't know that! Where do the Kurds live in London and why do they live there? What Is the poshest part of Notting Hill?What city has the most Ethopians outside Ethiopia? Name the city and district together with a fascinating explanation of why they are there.

The school was founded to serve an already established community who not only worked for the Japanese companies along the A40 corridor and in the City but also for NEC who had their HQ in Acton.There is a much larger Korean community though around New Malden and Raynes Park with up to 20,000 Koreans living there with bi-lingual road signs and thriving Korean Christian churches, supermarkets and restaurants.

The Japanese community is centred around their school in North Ealing like the Germans in Ham.

Airport primarily1945  Although Indians were travelling to the UK throughout the 19th and early 20th century, Southall saw an unprecedented rise of settlers from the Punjab after the Second World War to fulfil the industrial growth. Many were to find work in light industries in Southall and at the new development of Heathrow airportIn addition because of Woolf Rubber.‘“The Woolf rubber factory was the first one to employ non-whites because the recruiting officer was a military man who had been deployed in India. It was very difficult work and way below my qualifications, but I had no choice. I earned one shilling an hour and had to survive on £4 a week.’ Ajit Singh Rai, a founding member of the IWAS and a worker at Woolf’s Rubber Factory speaking to the Asian Times online. 1972 With the expulsion of Ugandan Asians, Southall experiences a large influx of East African Asians.They were not the first immigrant community in Southall though. It had an influx of Welsh immigrants in the 1930's escaping the poverty in the valleys and was the first main stop out of Paddington with affordable rents.
