There are lots of councillors who hold 'political based jobs in PR companies which specialise in swinging planning applications through for clients which in some cases are local authorities as well as developers. Many of these councillors are encouraged to get elected by their employers who get pretty cagey about their true purpose. Lobby companies are very similar.Hounslow Council has had several and although they were forced to declare (only when found out) their conflicts of interest and that they will not be placed on accounts inside their wards, one cannot be convinced that they do not get pressured into using their political access channels into other proposals and schemes. But this also makes a local councillor inneffective as a local representative. The planning meeting for the granting of the Brentford FC new stadium was a classic example, with the key 3 local councillors surrendering their voting positions and replacing them with 3 councillors from the other end of the borough to vote on a complex proposal about which none of them had a clue about. One even thought the development was to be in Carville Hall Park and yet still voted for it.  Consequently a development with huge issues of road infrastucture, lack of affordable ( in any sense) housing and parking have gone through without the input of local knowledge and concerns knowingly withheld by the local elected representatives and thus the ward residents had no voice for or against. There are too many of these people working in the Westminster Village and active in Local councils. It compromises integrity, honour and service to the local electorate with career political ambition. They should not be allowed to hold an elected position. 'Working in PR' is not a transparent enough description of an occupation. There are a few shining examples. Jason Stacey put in the hours and effort and it would be better if the Council leader was a full time post. But only with a reasonable salary with no scope for claiming all sorts of costs for accountant created losses. If making money comes first and foremost, then public service is not for you.It should be as simple as that.People who are passionate about duty and service seldom put income ahead of service

Nigel,I don't remember politicians being in such low esteem.  Maybe I have more time to watch politics. There is a tendency to vilify politicians and accuse them of enjoying favourable treatment. Whether they do enjoy or not, you will never stop seeing rants about them. I expect you rant, as I can do, about a number of issues. I some how doubt these websites do much to change political views, or what Senior Officers or Councillors get up to, certainly not on any significant scale. But rant on - fellow readers!I don't believe Councillors should be paid more allowances. I don't wish to see them make a career of just politics except possibly the Leader and Deputy Leader. I don't think any politician should be younger than 35. I want them to be much better educated in Local Government affairs.I want these people to have and to continue having experience of real life. Councils are notoriously inefficient. I want Councillors to have a proper job in the outside world so they can bring a bit of change based on outside practices. The question of who does much of the work must also be considered. These are the Officers, and their seniors have a deep vested interest in making a full career. Only if the Councillors are given significantly more power over the Officers would I consider raising the allowances. The risk is that the oligarchy we suffer might be replaced somewhat with anarchy.I can't comment on the Area Committee set up. Ward meetings should be four and not three per annum since too few issues are discussed. Democracy therefore suffers. Are politics being distanced because of Councillors engineering a distance, or is it because there is so much contempt for politicians? Is it them or us? Or is it that the OP is a baby boomer who like many showed more interest in politics than those who are riveted to their mobile screens so they miss what is around them? Like clocks on buildings!;-(
