Acton Recycling centre

A staff member at Bollo Road recycling centre has just told me he thinks the Council are looking to sell the land to 'developers' alongside a disused school on the neighbouring site. He says surveyors have been in.  Anyone else heard anything about this?

Charles.The email was sent to Streetwatchers on 11/10/14 and Flytipping as the heading.The reply on 14/10/14 gave me a reference number.My Streetwatchers number is always mentioned on the email, so there is absolutely no excuse for failure to remove the offending item which was reported in the usual manner.

Did you put fly tipping in the subject line with your streetwatchers number and you ask for a report number?  I always get a response with a note that it has been passed on to the Enforcement division.

Thank you for your concern Philippa. This was an accident that could have been so easily avoided if action has been taken to remove the offending item once it had been reported to Streetwatchers by me one week before.The kind of people who dispose of their unwanted junk in the street probably couldn't care less whether it is a health and safety issue or not. They are too mean to pay a small fee to the Council so their rubbish can be collected.This is happening more and more in Acton and it is high time that those who are caught flytipping pay a heavy price.I am still hobbling around and feeling annoyed at having to go upstairs one step at a time! The Doctor prescribed Ibuprofen and was about to prescribe sleeping tablets but I refused to take anything like that!My husband took photos of the dumped bed base/sofa and also of my injured knee and sent it to Streetwatchers. I had other bruises too which are fading now thank goodness.As I was not happy with the response from Streetwatchers I contacted them again and I was told this matter will be treated as a complaint which is the least they could do in the circumstances.To think that I spend my time reporting flytipped rubbish so that others are not injured then I fall over and sustain injuries myself!Thanks again Philippa.

The Council received a grant some time ago to update this facility and I'm not sure that they have done so since I manage to recycle just about everything I need to kerbside and so visit very little now that so much can be recycled kerbside.Mattresses still appear to be a big problem everywhere and the decision by this Household Waste & Recycling Centre to only take only one type of mattress (non-sprung I think at the last look does not help. We should be looking for a solution for getting mattresses sold with covers or any other solution so that they are not dumped so readily on change of tenancy.  I haven't checked recently but when I last did what they did take and what the website said they took did not tally. I hope the situation has changed.  Jean I hope you are alright and have taken some photos of the bed base and the gash on your leg for the record.

Acton I am sorry to say seems to be a general dumping ground for unwanted mattresses, bed bases and so, how much worse will it be if Stirling Road Recycling Centre closes down.This morning I fell and badly gashed my knee in our road because of a bed base which was dumped here a week ago. There was a wire loop protruding from this and it caught my ankle so I fell heavily.I had reported this to Streetwatchers a week ago but, surprise, surprise, Enterprise have still not removed it!These items dumped on our streets are a hazard and it is high time the council got a grip and heavily fine those responsible if at all possible.One suspects that irresponsible landlords may be to blame for some of these items being dumped after their tenants leave.

Bollo Road recycling centre could be closed before xmas. I believe there is going to be a petition circulated (hearsay). I guess that means everything goes in black bin bags or an 30-45minute drive in traffic to Greenford and then wait in the cue once there.  I wonder which is more economical.  If anyone can find the petition, please put it on the various forums.

Unlike many of the council's initiatives the Acton centre is heavily used and could do with greater capacity and the scope to deal with items that at present can only be taken to Greenford. My advice to those wishing to keep this place open is to start campaigning for a larger one, not only do we need it, we need a BIGGER one. Go rattle some cages.

That seems to be the same story which was circulating over two years ago.  The Bollo site is a very busy and productive entity.  I expect that if the story is true it will have a relatively large impact on some forms of recycling in the area, especially green waste.  Most likely green waste will end up in black bags as many will simply refuse to drive to Greenford

Yes, I have heard this too. It will be madness, where will people go - Greenford? Miles away and the traffic congestion in the area is ridiculous now. The time and cost of the petrol, sitting in the jam will be prohibitive. There will definitely be more fly tipping and that will cost more in the long run to clear up.

This has been discussed on the ActonW3 forum, I presume the Council don't mind having our streets filled with rubbish when the Stirling Road site is sold to developers?It is hard enough reporting flytipped rubbish at the moment, I dread to think what it would be like without the local rubbish recycling depot.Selling land for development seems to be more important than clean streets, mind you since Enterprise took over street cleanliness has been a disaster!

'twould be sad if the Stiring Road recycling Centre were to close - its been a very useful centre for ages. Keep us informed if there's any result in this rumour please.
