Dirty restaurants in Ealing

Another 4 restaurants taken to court re cockroaches, rats, mice.We have had lots of new restuarants and cafes opening up in Ealing Broadway, wonder what their hygiene rating is?We literally take our own lives by eating out. (This was overheard from a customer).Are the council doing enough? Do they check every single place which serves hot food to the public or do they pick and choose.Also, the cafe in Walpole park, still no toilets opened yet.

For once Ealing Council seem to be getting it right.They really do need to be on top of this and be unrelenting.  There are some really dodgy places and standards out there.I was in Croydon last month and saw rats running over the counter at an East Croydon station platform eatery ( whilst out of hours) and at the back of MacDonalds  and other shops.Heston is rife with vermin at the rear of food shops as is Tescos metro store in Iselworth and nothing ever seems to be done about it there.So well done Ealing Environmental officers, Keep turning the screw. It benefits us all consumer and business operator alike.

I am more of a pragmatist. Anything with a rating is probably safe as it has not been closed down!

Structural compliance covers  layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities such as hot water and wash hand basins.The management element IIRC covers hygiene routines (rather than actual hygiene) and record keeping e.g. usage dates temperature checks etc.

I do find these ratings on scores on the doors somewhat confusing. They have 3 criteria 1) hygene (very clear) 2)structural compliance (are they worried about subsidence?) 3) confidence in management.I have notice that some of these places rated as 1 or 2 have an ok hygene rating but have poor comments on the others. Would you go to a place like Thai Forester for example which has a 1 rating but it states the hygene and structural compliance is good but little confidence in management?

You need to check the 'Scores on the doors' website Gerry.It does take some time for new premises to appear.

Speaking of which - have the two new exciting and attractive restaurants in the ever growing "foodie strip" that is Ealing Green been inspected by the FSA Hygiene people(not that I'm suggesting that the restaurants need to be)? Or is it too early yet? Both restaurants look immaculate and well managed - one expects they'll score 4 or 5 stars.

Sadly not.You will find that the 4 and 5 star places proudly display their ratings. The 1 and 2 start places are, for some reason, reluctant, so to do :-)

Farm W5 has a 4 star rating and is a fantastic place.

Theres a cafe in the Green called organic W5. Does anyone know what its rating is. I tried looking but there was nothing on its door or window.

I have found over time and through experience that a clean restaurant/cafe/bar/pub is one where you see someone washing the floors at closing time with bleach or some other catering-strength chemicals. Acceptable practice is to do this once a day. If your preferred noshery doesn't do this, don't go there again.

"During the last 12 months Ealing Council has inspected 1,316 food businesses and prosecuted or enforced closures of 38 premises.Ealing has more food businesses than any other outer London borough and the council say it is one of the most proactive in terms of prosecuting food outlets who endanger the public.Residents are urged to check the food hygiene rating of local businesses at www.food.gov.uk. Anyone concerned that a business is breaching food hygiene regulations should email foodsafety@ealing.gov.uk or call 020 8825 6666."From the front page article.  So Ealing has more food businesses than any other outer borough.  I wonder how that is divided between different sorts of food businesses.I do hope that we are learning not to just do that British thing and vote with our feet but are a bit more vociferous!

We've notice that there are many more warnings and prosecutions from the local food standards watchdogs of errant food outlets in Ealing. Good thing too - the FSA should be very strict about hygiene in public food outlets and unclean restaurants.

I think the fact that they are uncovering so many badly run premises in the borough is probably a sign that they are being quite thorough.

All places serving food to the public are inspected.You can check their rating on the Ealing 'Scores on the Doors' site.Very recent openings may not appear yet.
