The trainline.com

I downloaded this free app after seeing the tv ad. I hoped it might help sort out the confusion of train ticket prices often highlighted on TV programmes such as Watchdog where a whole range of prices would be offered depending on who you asked, where and when you booked.Well, happy to report its a fabulous service.The Southern website shows tickets ranging from £17 to £37  one way bexhill to Victoria The trainline shows tickets £5 to £34Yes £5!And with a couple of clicks ive booked a single standard ticket on a direct train at 1pm in a couple of weeks for £5.If you are planning a rail trip please download the app and check the savings

Thanks everyone for the very cheap discounted train fares - booked three adults to Leeds and return(mid day journey) for a mere £22 each and that includes three reserved seats - excellent value - thanks again.

Actually, I have booked tickets through both Great Western and Virgin trains and have not paid any sort of extra fee (apart from postage to send the tickets to me.

My top tip. Always book your tickets through East Coast Trains no matter what train company you are travelling with. They are the only train company who do not charge credit or debit card fees. Before you book through trainline.com it is worth checking the train company's website. Often they will have exclusive offers which trainline.com can't match. Raileasy (www.raileasy.co.uk) is also worth looking at.Finally, I will give a plug for liftshare.com where you share the cost of petrol with the other passenger(s).

DavidFor longer journeys also check out 'sector pricing'. Breaking the journey down into sections (normally sitting on the same train in the same seat for the whole journey).My son and his friends did this to travel to Carlisle in four sectors. Normal return was a little over £200, the four sector version £18!IIRC it was:London-BirminghamBirmingham - Crewe Crewe to PrestonPreston to Carlisle
