What is the best bank for a 'fresher' starting at a Northern Uni, who wants to open a current account and work it mainly by internet? Must be a 'student-friendly' high street bank.

A decent bank! So few and far between.....but I think maybe the Yorkshire Bank could be suitable for your contact. Offers the usual facilities and also internet banking. I have always found the staff competent and down to earth so I would suggest trying them. If your student only wants internet banking then First Direct is best.
