Travellers Cheques

Last time I queued up at HSBC I noticed a sign announcing that travellers cheques were no longer accepted.Strange that I hadn't heard about this on the news (even though I stopped buying/reading newspapers about 10 years ago!I've always used travellers cheques when going abroad as it's the safest way to carry money about. So I guess now you're expected to carry large amounts of currency or withdraw with charges at ATMsI've just come across some dollar travellers cheques from yonks ago. Still valid?

Off I went to the post office with my us$ travellers cheques. After a few authorisation calls they cashed them. It was only when I got home that I realised how old they were ..from 2001!!  Nice to get nearly £50 from 13 years ago and glad I had a clear out !

We haven't used travellers cheques for years.  What's the favourite and safest way to have spending cash when holidaying?

I use a Caxton FX card, pre-loaded with Euros and protected with a pin. I can get the balance with a quick text.

I use a Thomas Cooke cash passport (which is Maestro based but there are Visa ones too) you preload it and can then use it at ATMs or in shops /restaurants - you can't check your balance which is a nuisance but otherwise it's handy and safe and inexpensive
