Retired Hubby Syndrome.

I've heard of different ailments, syndromes, health conditions and various new diseases, but this "Retired Hubby Syndrome" is a new one to me. It claims that more mature women are suffering this condition, which presents itself as depression, anxiety and stress(whatever that is?) and mental unease, caused by their husbands being at home and around the household more often when they(the husbands) retire.  Has anyone come across this new syndrome in other people?  I'm just curious.

My wife declines to comment but a widowed lady holidaying with us wants the retirement age for men to be 70.Personally, retiring at 67 from a profession that gave no freedom or variation in work hours, I did not want to take on any regular voluntary commitment outside the home save for continuation of my church related ones. Now after two years I also do visits to Harmonsworth Immigration Removal Centre 2 or 3 times a month, am active in U3A and am soon to do a day a week in a specialist library. OTH my wife is far busier than me outside the home with church and music related activities. So no space for syndromes here.

Poor retired hubbies... kicked out the front door at 11am and not let back in till 5pm (after Deal or No Deal).It doesn't seem fair... or is it an opportunity of a lifetime!

I've just read again your post Gerry and I mis-read it first time as I may have skimmed it. If the problem is that some women now see the 'personal space' that was their home is now 'invaded' by their husband on a daily basis then their husband's retirement seems to be their problem and not his. After all it is his home too and very likely his many years of hard work paid the mortgage. Short of him going back to work, maybe the wife could find herself something to do outside the home so that he can enjoy his well earned retirement in peace!

Surely anyone with any imagination could fill a couple or three days a week doing something that interests them to keep them motivated in life. Sometimes lack of money and loneliness and isolation a huge problem for single retirees but if you have a family or partner and a few bob in the bank you should realise how fortunate you are and try to enjoy yourself but try to do a little for those less fortunate now you have the time. I hope that doesn't read as  little pious, it is not intended to be.
