New Restaurants in Ealing

Turtle bay opening where the old post office was, mediteranean grill opening where Montys was, Café zeze where Sawyers was, New restaurant opening next to Oxfam by town hall, finally bella italia now shut!

You make a good point Nigel about the lack of certain kinds of shops in central Ealing.  My family complain that there isn't a really good haberdashery-cum mercer-cum curtain bits'n pieces type shop where one could get a satisfactory selection of bottons, knitting needles, clothing accessories and similar trifles and wool. Also, a trusted financial shop for specialist insurance, mortgage advice, money questions etc.Ealing seems to generate too many restaurants, cafes, food shops etc...not good for my colesterol and waistline methinks.

I just wish there was a proper hardware shop, a decent gentlemen's outfitters, a good haberdashery, etc. etc.You can't put up a shelf, wear or mend trousers with a bloody brioche. I'm getting fed up that Ealing Broadway is becoming 'restaurant central' to the exclusion of virtually every other type of shop.

Its great that there are many new restaurants in Ealing, but let's not forget the old reliable good ones too - like Cote in The Green W5. I know its a chain, but they have delicious dishes sometimes, all at reasonable prices. Yesterday, my wife and I had a tasty lunch there - their "Specials" menu - sauteed French black pudding with apple slivers, poached egg, frissee salad and extra frites.  Followed by, brioche bread and butter pud with double cream and caramel sauce...delicious. We were celebrating!

Not in Ealing but I can heartily recommend the New Thames restaurant on the High Street in Brentford.An Asian buffet. Primarily Chinese/Thai but also with a nice sushi bar and a limited selection of mild curries and accompaniments. Well over 40 dishes, all piping hot and fresh and of really good quality. Not surprising at all that the place was full of Asian families enjoying lunch.I used it for the first time today and will definitely visit again soon.

Yes, we'd be interested to hear opinions about Patisserie Valerie. Also, we think a top rate saltbeef bar would do well in Ealing. Any enterprising entrepreneurial shopkeepwers out there?

I pass by Angela Malik's at lunchtime every Thursday and Friday and there do seem to be a good few customers although not as busy as some other similar venues.  Their prices are a little on the high side and there is so much competition now in Ealing.  By the way, has anyone tried Patisserie Valerie in Oak Road?

Tried the Ya Sham in west Ealing last night.Nicely spiced, fresh Lebanese/ Syrian food delivered with wonderfully attentive and friendly service.Worth a visit.

Hogget is over-wintered and is 18-24 months old after which it becomes mutton.Don't understand why hogget is not more popular save that the sheep going to hogget will be those who can serve another breeding season or two and then end up as mutton.

When does hogget stop being hogget and become mutton?And, assuming my (limited) understanding is correct and hogget does indeed turn into mutton in the fullness of time, if shops supply mutton (which is granted not always easy to get hold of either) then why not hogget as well?

Nail on head really Gerry. I simply don't want to be preached to and if I eat meat I want the choice of selecting meat that has been slaughtered humanely rather than to some religious 'ritual'.Anyway, back to restaurants.I see that the late lamented Lantern on Ealing Common (RIP Michael Koutas and thanks for some truly memorable evenings) has reopened as 'Leila' a Moroccan and Lebanese eatery, anyone tried it?

TomIf I see any around I'll PM you. It's an autumn/winter meat so a few months yet.It's best cooked long and slow so many restaurants avoid it.If you find some try a traditional 'hogget and haricot bean' casserole. Unctuous meat and delicious.If you can't get hogget you can always use mutton.

OK Tom, no offence taken.I just don't even like the thought of inhumane slaughter however it is veiled in 'dietary laws'.Hogget is basically mature mutton. Stronger tasting than lamb, slow cooked as a roast it beats most joints of meat hands-down and also makes the most amazing stews. The problem is getting it, a few local traditional butchers have it now and again.

There are numerous bad ways of rearing and slaughtering animals for food in Europe - I prefer not to think about them. As for the rest of the world...well i'd prefer not to open that bag of worms. Each culture has their own way - who am I to preach to others. 'nuff said.

Sorry Nigel - I`m not trying to imply anything, I just wanted to know the reason. However you did specifically say you weren`t jewish so shouldn`t be subject to jewish tradition.  I`m not a troll... :)What is hogget? Never heard of that!!

The method of slaughter Tom and absolutely nothing else. I wondered how long that it would be before someone tried to imply otherwise, but then  don't feed trolls.There is no race or religion 'card' to play here; just a desire for the more humane treatment of animals that are destined for slaughter. The same reason I refuse to eat veal and far prefer hogget to spring lamb.

I would prefer choice and yes I also object to Kosher ritual slaughter. I am not Jewish and therefore do not have to subscribe to Jewish dietary laws. At least food which is Kashrut approved is so marked.

I understand some folks objection to Halal meat. Having eaten in many different countries, I can't tell the different tastes of Halal and non-Halal. Also, the many dubious methods of meat production around the world would make some shudder - notably foie gras and certain porks etc should worry most folk.  Me, I prefer not to think too much about it.

So folks, what are your problems with halal meat.? I ask because I lived for 12 years where there was no alternative - unless you fancied slaughtering your own. Would you object to kosher too?

Sadly, many of the wholesalers now only provide Halal meat.It's why I use local butchers and cook at home more often than not and eat a load more fish.

If those restaurants are anything like the food outlets here in Acton Vale, W3, they will all be using Halal meat. I cannot eat out around here at all.

These maybe oldish news items, but its good to be reminded of the many restaurants in Ealing - even better if there were reports about how good or bad they are.
