Tony I can't help with any competent repairer,it would probably have to go back to the manufacturer for a proper job,so how do you feel about a bit of DIY? You could (I've just tried it and it works) get some 4mm plaited nylon cord about 60mm long, fold it in half then melt the two ends in a gas flame and using leather gardening gloves squeeze the ends to bond them together forming a loop. The hard bit is going to be sewing it to the boot...there is probably a washer floating about between the inner and outer of the boot, you'd have to get the needle to go through the centre hole and back round the perimeter of the washer a few times using proper thread. If that bit sounds daft, have a look at the lower lace eyelets you'll probably find they're held on by just one line of thread and they don't usually fall off.Other things...you'd need a fairly long thread needle and a pair of pliers to grip and push the needle, don't try using fingers coz I've found that given the choice of going through leather or a finger the latter always wins, wear eye protection needles like shattering. I cheated and used a very small Dremell drill to make pilot holes in the test piece of leather which made it a breeze.Gortex... I've got 3 pairs of boots and in none of them does the Gortex come above the ankle bone,I hope yours are the same. Most people use over-trousers which cover the top part of the boot.Of course your son would have to thread the lace through the new loop to put on and take off said boot,it's his fault, shouldn't broken the original!
