"It's a design principle being rolled out across the UK, Europe and the USA, so you're going to have to get with the times I'm afraid.People are taking the streets back from the motor vehicle, about time too!"I take it you have tried crossing roads in some of our great world cites then? try Paris, Rome New York and the worst Shanghai where drivers take no heed of zebra crossing, and in Shanghai where they don't stop at red lights for pedestrians, its a shame our town planners come up with these idiotic ideas, that will cost lives. And taking streets back from motor vehicle, yea right, really, "up the revolution" !!Roads are for everyone, pedestrians have pavements, mix pedestrians and cars, you get accidents, fault of both drivers and pedestrians, why do schools ask for more pelican and zebra crossing near by, so kids can cross the road a safely, So going with times you say, if that means more well though out projects like Church Road, then we all will suffer.
