World Cup chances of success?

What are England football team's chances in the forthcoming World Cup Finals in Brazil?  Will we get further than the group matches?

Well said Keith.The corruption so rife in the game will continue while FIFA bribe and kowtow in equal measure to similarly corrupt 'non European' football associations.UEFA need to break free of Blatter & Co. for the good of the world game.

It's about time the Germany, Italy, Holland, Argentina, Brazil, Spain, England and all the other big teams and any other nation who wished to join formed a rival organisation to fifa and said 'You know what, we are going to have our own competition and you can organise a tournament with anyone who is left' just to kerb the rank hypocrisy of Blatter and his boys. I wonder which comp. would get more viewers and more revenue...? I only hope it happens in my life time. Maybe if I live to 200...

Funnily enough the exit (inevitable) of England has always, in the past, had a negative effect on the FTSE 100 index (obviously the 'city boys' are footy fans.This time around though, nothing, nada in fact the market is up.

It`s been a great competition so far , only disappointment has been Brazil imo. Best of the lesser fancied sides Mexico and Australia who played their part in a fine match against the Dutch last night , what a goal from Cahill, beautiful volley. Tonight yes Rooney to play in the centre behind Sturridge with Welbeck on the left providing a bit of cover for  Baines who was worryingly exposed against Italy and that product of the QPR academy , Sterling skinning the Uruguay defence on the right flank. COME ON ENGLAND !

You can bet yer boots that Roy won't be playing Rooney out wide again but he will be no. 9 or 10 where he should be imo. I will wager that Sterling goes on the right and Welbeck left and if either of them tire or we have the game sewn up(!)with 20 mins to go Milner, possibly Lalanna(SP?)might make an appearance for one of them. I think that our Wayne is going to be playing the Gerrard role after this world cup as everyone and his brother seems to want to be a no. 10.I've a fiver at 7/1 that our Wayne gets a brace or more..watch this space!

This morning, there are many sleepy and disappointed heads in Ealing after the sad result in Brazil late last night. Its a funny old game is football. I thought Italy played well.

According to The Times "Fink Tank" - an objective assessment based on statistical data - we have a 3% chance of picking uop the trophy but above 70% chance of getting through group stages.  Which is probably our station in world football.  But who knows - what with the standard of refereeing so far.

Whatever the odds and all the opinions of pundits, its going to be exciting watching the World Cup matches - I can't wait for it to begin.

Rugby is much less 'upper-class' than in the past.It still creates friendships for life, is now FAR cheaper to watch than comparable football games and is now, in the professional era far more likely to be played by sportsmen than gentlemen.I have, if fifty years of watching the game only ever seen one bit of crowd trouble at a rugby match at that was among the supporters of a team fighting with each other at the Middlesex 7's. As a result they were banned for life  - no mucking about.The supporters are 'self-policing' in that if there is bad language the person using it is swiftly admonished. My wife and I were at Twickenham when a chap behind let go with a tirade of abuse at a player of the team he was supporting. He needed no chastising and immediately stood up and apologised to everyone especially the ladies present. The round of applause for his contrition was a joy to behold.

I think it's definitely a class thing, Gerry. If you are a Labour supporter, then you should hope that England do badly, because a win would sent David Cameron into next year's election with a smile on his face as the feel-good factor kicked in.

My Dad used to say one was a gentlemen's game played by oiks and one was an oik's game played by gentlemen. I cannot for the life of me remember which was which - as he loved both it could be either!

Rugby Union is a great sport. So is Association Football.  How come the spectators and players of each are so very different?  Is the difference a 'class' thing and how come the 'Britishness' of each are so varied?

Don't really care to be honest, the 'real' World Cup is in 2015 when the finest Rugby Union teams in the world converge in GB for matches without feigned injury, time wasting and referees who are shown respect watched by fans from opposing teams standing next to each other enjoying a pint.
