Ealing Council's Gurnell Leisure Centre is about to turn 25 and to celebrate the centre will host a range of free activities over the weekend of 22-23 July.

The facility opened with a splash on 24 July 1981 when then MP Harry Greenway was pushed into the pool as part of the celebrations. Since then Gurnell has served the sports and leisure needs of thousands of local residents.

The centre houses one of London's two 50m swimming pools, a recreation pool, sports field, cafeteria, multi-purpose activity room, sauna, steam room and fitness suit.  It is currently managed by Leisure Connection on behalf of the council.

Residents will be able to enjoy a range of free activities as part of the 25th birthday fun.  These include:

Football taster sessions: Saturday/Sunday 10am-12pm and 2-4pm

Afternoon swim: Saturday/Sunday from 1pm

Gym taster sessions: Sunday 10am-4pm

Fitness classes:  All classes on the current timetable will be free and extra classes will be run on the day.

There will be offers on all types of membership throughout the weekend and face painting will be available for the youngsters.

Ealing's Mayor Councillor Mrs Diana Pagan will join the festivities on Saturday between 11am and 12pm when she will tour the facility and observe the range of activities taking place.

Cllr Mrs Pagan said:  "Gurnell Leisure Centre has been helping local residents keep fit and healthy for a quarter of a century.  There will be a fantastic range of free activities to enjoy during the birthday celebrations so I hope to see everyone there."
