The Best Chicken Curry in Ealing?

Luke Stoughton recommends The Hare and Tortoise

As an Ealing resident for the majority of my life, I’ve tried most of the restaurants in and around Ealing Broadway.

We are very lucky in Ealing with the variety of food on offer and the fact that many of the restaurants are not part of large generic chains.

The Hare & Tortoise on Haven Green has been enormously popular since it opened a few years back, so much so that they have now taken over the next door unit as well following the demise of the instantly doomed Wok 2 Go (surely one of the worst business decisions of all time to open it next to the H&T).

As a result the kitchen is now twice as big as before and the original restaurant now has more seating capacity – however you can still expect to queue if you get there after 9pm, even midweek.

The choice of food is wide, taking in delicious sushi, tempura, dumplings through to chow meins, duck, laksa and curries. They also serve Asahi beer and a variety of freshly squeezed juices. All main courses are around the £6 mark making it exceptional value for money.

The real star for me though is the Malaysian Chicken Curry. Having lived in Singapore for a few years I can vouch that it really is as good as the real thing served in the markets in Singapore and Malaysia.

It is full of flavour with just enough heat and the serving is generous and full of chicken.. I always look through the menu with the intention of having something different and return to the same place. Accompanied by the spicy wing sticks as a starter it really is the dinner of champions. All the food is freshly prepared and you can watch the chefs at work while you wait for your food.

Fine dining it isn’t, but it provides brilliant value for money and you can have a hearty meal for two for around £20 with a couple of soft drinks and the atmosphere is always bustling.
