Regaining Pub of the Year title
The Red Lion on St Mary’s Road is being awarded the title of West Middlesex Pub of the Year 2008 by members of the West Middlesex branch of CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale.
Runner-up in the competition was the Rose and Crown, also on St Mary’s Road, Ealing.
CAMRA’s Pub of the Year contest involves beer lovers visiting local pubs over the course of a year and keeping a log of beer quality. A short-list is then drawn up and more detailed surveys are carried out. A further short-list is produced and all local members are encouraged to vote for the best pub.
David Bender, the Chairman of West Middlesex CAMRA, said:“The Red Lion is a worthy winner. It’s very welcoming and it’s a place I always feel happy to walk into.”
Current licensees Jonathan and Victoria Lee have been in the trade since 1985, taking a ten-year lease on the Red Lion in June 2001, having beaten off competition from 60 applicants. Trade has tripled since they took over, following the opening of an extension in 2002 which is decorated and furnished in a style compatible with the rest of the pub.
The Red Lion previously won in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006. Jonathan Lee said, “We are thrilled to be recognised again for the quality of our beers and our position in the local community.”
Local CAMRA members presented Jonathan Lee with a certificate to mark his win at a ceremony at the Red Lion on Tuesday 14. The pub served Fullers 1845 for the occasion – a beer rarely seen on hand pump.
