Iconic designer speaks about his career

Ben Kelly, the designer of the Hacienda nightclub, Factory Records and Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood’s ‘Seditionaries’ shop visited Ealing Council’s Westside Young People’s Centre on Thursday 17 May.

The event was an opportunity for those who are interested in working in the field of design to meet one of the most highly regarded British designers, listen to him speak about his long and varied career and to put their questions to him.

Ben's audience consisted mostly of local young people who use the council's Westside centre as well as some people from Ealing Hammersmith and West London College and the University of West London.

Councillor Patricia Walker, cabinet member for Children and Young People, said: “Ben is a famous and accomplished designer, so it was a huge thrill and honour for our young people to meet him and listen to his experiences and approach.

“The Westside building was designed to foster creativity and collaboration, so it is particularly appropriate that Ben is one of our first vistors.”

A replica of Ben Kelly’s Hacienda can currently be seen as part of the V & A Museum’s major exhibition: 'British Design 1948-2012: Innovation in the Modern World'. The exhibition is open until Sunday 12 August.

The Westside Young People’s Centre is on Churchfield Road, Ealing W13 9NF. To find out more, call 020 8825 7578.
