A terminally ill man aches to escape the alienation
and civil servitude he has imposed upon himself
throughout his life, and looks for meaning in the
little time he has left. This is the most celebrated of
Kurosawa’s contemporary-set films, praised for the
protagonist’s existential quest and the critiques of
society which still resound in the Japan of today.

Throne of Blood (Kumo no su-jo) (1957)
Bringing Macbeth to the heights of Mount Fiji and the
depths of evil, Shakespeare’s tragedy thrives through the
cultural translation as a thrilling and frightening vision of
people that are so power-hungry, blood-thirsty, and
maddened by ambition that it drives them to their doom.
It is among the very finest adaptations of the Bard’s work.
