Ealing Choral Society Celebrates 50 years of Music Making
Occasion to be marked with concert at Ealing Abbey
2012 has been a golden year for Ealing Choral Society who celebrate their 50th anniversary this year.
The occasion will be marked by a concert at Ealing Abbey on Friday the 16th November at 7.45pm featuring Beethoven’s Mass in C and Handel’s Zadok the Priest, both of which were performed at the choir’s inaugural concert in November 1962. They will be joined by Sinfonia Brittanica and Ealing Abbey Choir, under the inspirational baton of Director of Music Jonathan Williams.
Starting life as an evening class at what used to be Ealing Technical College, Ealing Choral Society has grown from strength to strength. They are now a vibrant, community choir with 90 members of all ages and 50 associate members. Over the past 50 years the choir has performed around 200 concerts across West London, the South Bank, the Royal Albert Hall and the Cadogan Hall with world-class orchestras and soloists, singing the works of over 100 composers. They have also travelled as ambassadors of Ealing to visit choirs in France, Germany, The Netherlands and Ireland.
In its time the choir has performed all of the great choral masterpieces as well as many contemporary works. They had the privilege of performing the UK Premiere of the Donizetti Requiem Mass in 1980, and Gloria and Credo in 1993 under the baton of the late James Gaddarn. In June 2012, they performed the World Premiere of Julian Philips Sea and Stars, a work specially commissioned to mark their 50th anniversary.
Ealing Choral Society is also proud of their involvement in the community over the years. They have helped to raise money through carol concerts in support of charities including the Parkinson Disease Society, Ealing Soup Kitchen, Bereft, the Tom Clabburn Memorial Fund and Meadow House Hospice.
