The Brentham Club Prepares to Mark 120 Years of May Day Tradition

Children invited to design posters for next year's festival

The Brentham Club celebrations are believed to be one of the largest in the country

July 30, 2025

The Brentham Club in Ealing has announced a poster design competition for children to help promote next year’s 120th annual May Day celebration.

The festival is set to take place on Saturday 16 May 2026. The event, which begins at 2:30pm with a procession from the club, is one of the oldest continuing May Day traditions in the country.

Young people are invited to submit original poster designs that include an eye-catching image, the event date and time, and a personal quote about what May Day means to them. Entries are open to all children, regardless of whether they’ve previously taken part in the festivities. Submissions should be sent to mayday@brentham.com by 20 September 2025.

Organisers hope the poster competition will encourage younger generations to engage with the tradition and reflect on its meaning. The winning design will be used to promote the 2026 celebration, which is expected to draw hundreds of spectators and participants.

The Brentham May Day celebration has been a fixture of the local calendar since 1906, when it was first held in the Brentham Garden Suburb. The event typically features a brass band-led procession, the crowning of a May Queen, and traditional maypole and country dancing performed by children dressed in white and adorned with fresh flowers. Characters such as Britannia and Jack-in-the-Green—a walking, dancing figure covered in foliage—add to the festive atmosphere.

The Brentham Club itself, located on Meadvale Road, was founded in 1911 and has long served as a hub for sports and social activities in the area. Today, it hosts tennis, cricket, bowls, and community events, continuing its legacy as a cornerstone of local life.
