The printmaking career of one of Britain’s most internationally respected artists will be documented in an exhibition at PM Gallery, west London, opening in January 2009.
Howard Hodgkin: Prints brings together forty-three prints spanning Hodgkin’s entire print career to date. The exhibition runs from 17 January- 28 February 2009 at PM Gallery, the extension to architect Sir John Soane’s home, Pitzhanger Manor in Ealing, west London.

Howard Hodgkin: Prints is the first large-scale exhibition appraisal of Howard Hodgkin’s print career. Hodgkin is best known as a painter, but over the past forty years he has explored the possibilities of printmaking, producing a substantial body of work as accomplished as his oils. He has produced around 130 editions of beautifully crafted prints, large and small, using a variety of media and techniques.
The etchings and lithographs that dominate Hodgkin’s prints of the last twenty-five years are, like most prints, produced as a series of layers. But, as well as employing the more formal processes of printmaking, Hodgkin has broken many of the rules of the craft, and the results are among the most stunning effects of colour and surface in contemporary printmaking.
Hodgkin’s first experiments with printmaking were as a student, when he recognised the potential of prints to create texture and layered imagery. He was also fascinated by the art historical tradition of printmaking; some of his favourite artists – Vuillard, Bonnard and Matisse – were influenced by the graphic art of Toulouse Lautrec and Jules Cheret.
His first professional print, Enter Laughing, was produced in 1964, when he was one of twenty-five young artists to make their first screenprints with master printer, Chris Prater, of Kelpra Studio, the results published together as an ICA portfolio. Hodgkin introduced hand colouring in 1977, a development which allowed him to bring the spontaneity and directness of his paintings into his graphic work.
Howard Hodgkin: Prints is organised and toured by Barbican Art Gallery, London.
