Northfields Allotments Holding Sixth Annual Summer Open Day
Plotholders at London's oldest allotment site welcoming visitors
Attractions include an apiary, a World War II Anderson shelter and a wildlife-friendly shed
London’s oldest allotment site is inviting visitors to its sixth annual Summer Open Day on Sunday 3 July. Plotholders at Northfields Allotments on Northfield Avenue, West Ealing, will open the gates between 1pm and 5pm.
Visitors will be able to see the wide variety of plots on the site and check out what is growing, as well as joining a guided tour to discover more about the site’s wildlife and history.
There will be a refreshment stall selling tea, coffee and cakes, a plant and produce stall, a BBQ and a bar where visitors can enjoy a drink. Entry is free, although donations will be welcome.
Other attractions include: an onsite apiary where bees produce Northfields Allotments honey, a World War II Anderson shelter; and a wildlife-friendly shed made from recycled materials.
Visitors should come to the main allotment gates at the north end of Northfield Avenue in West Ealing (opposite Dean Court). Dogs are welcome if kept on a lead.
Penny Wark Chair of the Allotment Committee said, “As we reach peak growing season, the plots will be looking their best, and we hope people will join us for what promises to be a lovely afternoon.
“We really appreciate the support given to our open days by the local community. It’s great to have a summer celebration and once again our plotholders are delighted to welcome visitors to this historic site.”
The site dates back to 1832, when the Bishop of London enclosed the area for use by the local community and it is now held in trust by the housing charity Pathways and managed by the Ealing Dean Allotment Society (EDAS), which consists of allotment tenants.
