One of the country’s oldest magic clubs is celebrating its 80th birthday — and it wants local magicians to help shape its next chapter.

The Zodiac Magical Society, based in Ealing, has launched a borough-wide call-out for new magicians, from seasoned performers to complete beginners with a curiosity for card tricks, illusions or mind-reading. The club meets every Wednesday and it says it has built a reputation as one of London’s friendliest and most hands-on spaces for learning and performing magic.

“This club is like no other,” said Zodiac President William Spencer. “It’s helped me learn so much, and I’ve made some wonderful friends from the world of magic. Such a lot of fun.”

Unlike many magic societies, the Zodiac places a strong emphasis on performance. Members have regular opportunities to test new material, practise routines and receive feedback in a supportive environment. The club also hosts monthly visiting lecturers — often well-known names in the magic world — and runs several competitions across different disciplines, including close-up magic, stage magic, mind-reading and card magic.

Non-magicians are welcome too. The club invites members of the public to attend competitions, and occasionally to help judge them. The next event, the Birthday Cup, takes place on 8 April.

To mark its 80th anniversary, the Zodiac is opening its doors to new members with a full month of free access. Annual membership fees are deliberately kept low, and members receive a monthly magazine as well as free use of the club’s extensive library of magic books and DVDs.

“No one suspects Ealing has one of the country’s best magic clubs on its doorstep,” said Spencer. “Get in touch if you fancy visiting or are thinking of becoming a member. Now is a great time to join, have fun and become a better magician.”

The Zodiac Magical Society also performs for local charities and community groups, offering entertainment while supporting fundraising efforts. Organisations interested in hosting a performance are encouraged to get in touch.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.
