Graduation Day at Ealing's University
Students at University of West London celebrate receiving their degrees
Nearly 1,000 UWL graduates have been awarded their degrees in the presence of family and friends in two days of celebration at UWL’s winter graduation ceremonies, held in Weston Hall on the university’s Ealing campus.
In addition, honorary degrees were conferred on five individuals from a range of fields, including campaigner and Life Peer Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon and the Chief Executive of Heathrow Airport, John Holland-Kaye.
Baroness Lawrence received her award for her services to community relations and subsequent tireless efforts to reform the justice system since the murder of her son Stephen in 1993.
She said: ‘I am so pleased and honoured to receive this award from the University of West London, which is an integral part of businesses and communities throughout west London. I was delighted to attend the occasion.’
John Holland-Kaye, was recognised for his longstanding support for UWL and maintaining Heathrow’s close relationship with the university.
He said: ‘I’m delighted to be the recipient of this honorary degree from the University of West London. We’re incredibly proud of the relationship that Heathrow Airport has with the university. Education and the development of skills are crucial to the UK’s success and we’re very excited to be working closely with the university to provide guest lectures and programmes that nurture those skills.’
UWL also awarded honorary degrees to community champion Mike Smith-Clare, renowned forensic investigator Dr Karl Harrison and Patricia Jefferies, who has dedicated her life to caring for terminally ill patients.
Professor Peter John, Vice-Chancellor of UWL, said: ‘This has been a tremendous period of success for the university and our students have helped make UWL the very special place it is today. Our graduates’ accomplishments are the fruit of hard work over many years and will change their lives forever and hold them in good stead. We look forward to learning about their achievements in the future and believe they can be inspired by the outstanding individuals on whom we have bestowed honorary degrees today.’
Students graduated from the eight Schools and Colleges comprising UWL: London College of Music, School of Human and Social Sciences, the Claude Littner Business School, School of Law and Criminology, London Geller College of Hospitality and Tourism, London School of Film, Media and Design, the School of Computing and Engineering and the College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare.
In the past year the university has moved up 28 places to No. 56 in the Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018, making UWL the top modern university in London and 8th modern university in the UK.
