Blasting Their Way To The Top

Thames Valley Student radio through to awards final

A student radio station run from the historic Ealing studios has been nominated for a top award.

Blast Radio, at Thames Valley University (TVU) is being considered for a national Student Radio Award in the category of 'Best Marketing and Branding'.

Students from a variety of courses came together for the Blast Radio project, sharing responsibility for all aspects of the running of the station – from devising the programming schedule and producing the shows, through to the marketing of the station to students and other local listeners.

Blast Radio, which transmitted online in May used a number of exciting branding and marketing techniques to attract listeners and catch the attention of the competition judges.

These included producing three short videos screened across the campus, articles in student newspapers and the local press, charity car washes, and a strong use of social networking sites to promote the station.

Terry Smith, Blast Radio's Head of Marketing, said:
'It’s so great to be nominated! I’m still in disbelief. As head of the marketing team, I know how hard we all worked and it’s such a thrill that our effort and achievement has been recognised like this. Of course everyone who contributed to Blast this year deserves credit. We had a lot of obstacles to overcome but once we did there was real synergy across the station. I think the best part of working on Blast radio was that we all really enjoyed what we were doing, so for me the SRA nomination is the icing on the cake!'

Blast Radio will compete against the five other nominees in their category at the prestigious awards ceremony which will be held on Thursday 5 November at the IndigO2 arena.
