Opposition Mounts to Disposal of Southall Town Hall

Public meeting planned to consider possible legal challenge

Southall Town Hall

Opposition is mounting to the proposed disposal of Southall Town Hall and campaigners have set up a public meeting to formulate their next steps.

The once centre of local government in Southall was built in 1897 and was in use from 1898-1965 as a council chamber and office. However, Ealing Council say the building has been running at a loss for some time and sought bidders for a lengthy lease - essentially disposing of the property.

There has been much opposition and Save Southall Town Hall Campaign Group have arranged a public meeting on Friday 8th December 2017. The meeting will:

  • Hear from key note speakers, tenants and residents about the impact of sale
  • provide information to residents about Ealing Council's decision to sell Southall Town Hall
  • consider a legal challenge and the possibility of a judicial review of Ealing Council's decision.

In September 2017 Ealing Council agreed to lease the Town Hall for 250 years to a private religious group. Campaigners say the entire process did not involve public consultation and has not considered the likely negative impact of sale on local communities.

Southall Town Hall is the last remaining public building in the town and linked closely with the history and development of Southall and it's communities. Save Southall Town Hall Campaign want to preserve it as a public building, open to all residents.

The group has been established by residents, community groups and businesse including :

The Monitoring Group, Southall Community Alliance, Migrant Advice and Advocacy Service, Southall Self Defence Club, Lancaster Estate Residents Association, Southall Transition, Horn of Africa Disability Elderly Association, Lalis Direct Care Ltd, Samafal Community Association etc

The meeting will take place at the Dominion Centre in Southall from 7.00 - 9.00 pm.
