London Mayor Boris Johnson is using new powers to have the final say on the fate of the Southall Gas Works development.
The proposals for the site included 3750 new homes, a retail village and leisure facilities and were turned down by both Ealing and Hillingdon councils who said the development would cause traffic and congestion problems and threaten local ecology.
The Mayor has now 'called in' the plans, and claims the regeneration of the area alongside the overarching benefit to London must be considered.
Boris Johnson, said: “This proposal clearly meets the test of a planning application of major significance to London with the homes it will deliver and the jobs it will create.
"Failure to develop this key brownfield site could be detrimental to the future economic prosperity of west London, which is an important driver for the capital’s entire economy.
"I therefore believe it is right that I scrutinise this application in greater detail.”
This is only the second time the Mayor has used these powers to make decisions on major planning applications.
The Planning Inspectorate will make a decision on the appeal next year. Any submissions about the appeal must be made by 6th January. Comments on the Appeal Can Be Made Here
