New Eye Scan Equipment For Ealing Opticians

Hi tech device could help pick up health problems earlier

A local opticians has become the first eye care practice in Ealing to offer patients state-of-the art scans.

Hynes’s on Northfield Avenue has installed OCT (Ocular Coherence Tomography) equipment which can check for damage from potentially serious conditions such as diabetes and glaucoma, so that treatment can be implemented quickly.

Similar to an ultrasound scan, OCT uses light waves rather than sound waves to create an image of the different layers that make up the back of the eye. A digital photograph of the surface of the eye is also captured so that areas of concern can be cross-referenced. This type of technology was previously used for research purposes, and is only just becoming available for comprehensive eye examinations.

The retina can be seriously affected by many common diseases including age-related macular degeneration, diabetes and glaucoma, which can lead to visual impairment and even blindness. By having this technology available in practice, the eye care professionals at Hynes Optometrists will be able to pick up any problems at a much earlier stage, enabling better treatment options. Regular scans also mean eye health can be monitored.

“We were the first opticians in Ealing to bring digital retinal photography to the high street and are always striving to remain at the forefront of eye care technology; scanning patients on the OCT means yet again we can offer the best possible service,” said Joy Hynes from Hynes Optometrists.

“Scans using this technology really do make a difference to treatment outcomes and give patients the peace of mind that their eye health is being monitored over the long term.”
