Council promises the annual Light up the Lane won't be disrupted
Work starts next week to improve Pitshanger Lane and make it easier and safer for shoppers and motorist to get around.
Ealing Council is carrying out the work in conjunction with TfL, which has invested £600,000 in the Streets for People scheme.
The project follows consultation in December 2007 that showed 77% of respondents were in favour of plans to improve the area.
Work is expected to be completed by April 2010, but will be suspended from the end of November until the beginning of January to prevent any disruption to Christmas shopping and to ensure the Light up the Lanes event can take place unhindered.
Improvements include:
three new loading bays and seven stop and shop bays, making it easier for shoppers to park and for businesses to receive deliveries
congestion will be reduced through removing pinch points and relocating bus stops
raised junction tables will reduce vehicle speeds, making it safer for cyclists and pedestrians
new benches, bins, bollards and cycle stands will improve the appearance of the street
repaved footpaths from outside North Ealing Primary School to the junction with Princess Gardens
resurfaced carriageway from Linfield Road to Scotch Common
new heritage-style street lighting
Cabinet member for Regeneration and Transport, Councillor David Millican, said: “Pitshanger Lane is a very attractive niche shopping area already. I’m pleased it is now being further improved to make it an even more inviting place for shoppers and residents.”
Some side roads will be closed for a short time to allow the works to be carried out, but
Pitshanger Lane will not be fully closed at any stage.
