A creative University of West London (UWL) graduate is up for a national prize after transforming his bus journey to Ealing into a panoramic photographic artwork.

Commercial Photography graduate, Amir Behbahani was named as a finalist in the Signature Art Prize with his UWL degree show piece, Glitchland – a composition of more than 200 metres of photographs documenting his journey to the university each day.

Born and raised in Tehran, Iran, Amir came to the UK to study and remained fascinated by patterns and compositions.

Now living in Maidstone, Kent, the 39-year-old said: “I am so proud that my work has been nominated for the Signature Art Prize. I hope this will help me take my career to the next level as I am excited about what I can do next.

“I am fascinated by visual art and very interested in data art and visualisation. To me there are clear similarities between digital photographs and woven artefacts, they are a tapestry of data with every pixel representing a knot in the overall piece.”

Paul Lohneis, head of UWL’s London School of Film, Media and Design, said: “We are proud to offer our students real-world experience as they study, and the chance to learn from industry experts. It is always inspiring to see our graduates going on to achieve success in their chosen careers and we wish Amir all the best of luck.”

Since graduating in 2018, Amir has also had work nominated for the graduate art prize ARTIQ.
