The first session of cardiac screening for young people since the lockdown took place this Sunday (7 November) at Ealing Trailfinders.

The session was facilitated by the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) and The Tom Clabburn and Claire Prosser Memorial Fund which aims to increase the provision of free screenings.

Despite continuing restrictions due to Covid-19, over eighty people from 14-35 were screened with five referred on for further tests.

The fund’s free screenings have been suspended since 2019 but returned to a new location at the Olympic Pavilion at Trailfinders Sports Club in Vallis Way, Ealing.

Paul Clabburn said, “We really appreciate the effort Trailfinders put into hosting the event. Operations manager Reuben Hill was instrumental in making the day happen, from initially showing us around the facilities to making sure that everything was in order on the day. Trailfinders are a community focussed club and we hope this will be the first of many screening events we hold with them.

“We are also extremely grateful to the brilliant CRY team who were as friendly and professional as ever and managed to screen far more people than we expected. We also want to thank anyone who has donated to our Fund. None of this could happen without people putting their hands in their pockets.”

The Tom Clabburn and Claire Prosser Memorial Fund supports CRY by providing these tests and has raised more than £160,000 allowing more than 2,500 young people to be tested mostly in the Ealing area. One in 300 tests undertaken by CRY reveal a potentially life-threatening condition.

Tom died on October 5, 2007, aged 14. He was one of the 12 young people aged 14-34 who die each week in the UK from an undiagnosed heart condition most of whom had no symptoms, according to CRY. Cardiac testing can identify those at risk in the vast majority of cases.

I Italy, where screening is mandatory for all young people engaged in organised sport, the incidence of young sudden cardiac death has been reduced by 89%.

Tom’s mum, Claire, died from a heart condition on December 1, 2014. She was 54. She believed passionately that young people should be able to attend free screenings that could identify undiagnosed heart conditions.
