Olympic Torch Relay : Day 67 - Heading To Ealing

We hear from a local torchbearers

As inspirational people from across the UK make their way around the country carrying the Olympic torch they will be joined by Ealing resident, Ian Muxlow, who has been chosen to take part in this once-in-a life-time opportunity to carry the flame.

Ian, 34, is a Researcher in the Borough Intelligence Unit in Ealing. He joined the MPS in 2006 as a PCSO on the Hanger Hill Safer Neighbourhood Team before becoming a Researcher two years ago. His current role involves him identifying offending patterns in crime and intelligence reports.

Ealing resident and father of two Ian will be running with the torch on Tuesday 24 July in the borough of Richmond and will be cheered on by his family, friends and the 1st Greenford Cub Scouts.

Ian was nominated to carry the torch by 17-year-old Ash Pakzad who is currently being mentored by Ian to become a Leader. Ian has spent the last 15 years as a Cub Scout Leader and spends most nights of the week scouting- encouraging children to explore many possibilities through activities such as camping.

Once a Cub Scout himself, Ian joined at the age of eight and has been with the scouting movement ever since. It provided him with fun opportunities as well as equipping him with the life skills needed to help him gain a place at college and to obtain employment. He credits the Scouts for making him the person that he is today.

A valued member 1st Greenford Scouts, Ian takes pride in seeing the children achieve their potential. Some of the children come from deprived backgrounds and Scouts provides a low cost opportunity for children to get involved in a range of activities without feeling left out.

In addition to his scouting duties Ian also assists as a group leader at his local musical society summer project where approximately 100 children are given the opportunity to learn song and dance culminating in the children putting on a show for the public.

Ian Muxlow said: “Everything that scouting has done for me has been worth while and I wanted to give children the skills I was given to become positive members of their own communities. Scouting gives you moral ethics and has helped me to become the person that I am; I wanted to give the next generation of children the same opportunities.

“I can’t put into words how it feels to be nominated to carry the Olympic torch; I will be carrying the torch for all the Scout Leaders who give up their time to make a positive impact on their local communities.

“My eight-year-old daughter is taking great pleasure in telling her classmates that I will be a torch bearer and is giving them regular updates and when my four-month-old daughter gets to an age where she understands about the Olympics I will be able to tell her I was a part of something very special.”

Ash Pakzed who nominated Ian said: “Ian is a man with a true heart for the community, he is a strong believer that children are the future and is an extensively supportive mentor to me.”

Ian has prepared for his moment by watching the BBC torch cam and he is looking forward to when the torch is lit and seeing cub scouts faces in the crowd.
