As the festive season begins, the St Bernard’s Choir at West London NHS Trust is preparing to lift hearts and voices with a series of Christmas performances that celebrate connection, recovery, and the power of song.

Now in its ninth year, the choir is a truly unique ensemble — bringing together staff, current inpatients, and former service users to sing side by side. It’s a space where music becomes a bridge between experiences, and where collaboration replaces hierarchy.

Led by Deborah Klayman, Regina Okeke, and long-time member Gary, the choir has grown into a cherished part of life at the Trust which oversees mental health services. Its inclusive ethos and shared leadership model have helped build confidence, foster friendships, and support wellbeing across the community.

“It’s something special that brings people together,” said Deborah. “It’s not just about singing — it’s about connection, confidence and a sense of community.”

Music therapist Alice Pollock, also a choir member, highlighted the therapeutic benefits of singing:

“Everyone has a voice and can participate. Singing improves mood, breathing, posture, and memory — and when we sing together, we’re united in a common experience.”

One of the choir’s most inspiring stories is Gary, a former inpatient who now co-leads the group and performs on guitar.

“Playing guitar and singing with everyone feels great — it’s like being part of a little family,” he said.

The choir’s first festive performance will take place at Ealing Hospital’s Café on the Hill on Friday 6 December, with further appearances planned throughout the month. Audiences can expect a joyful mix of seasonal favourites and heartfelt harmonies.
